Faulty Laptop advice needed

If anyone can advise on the below I would appreciate any advice I can get.

September last year I bought a really decent Sony laptop (about £800 new)from the highstreet, and just recently the battery has stopped charging unless the connection is in the ideal spot (the conector wiggles around inside the psu socket like it never used to).

I called the store and they couldnt find me on the system, but as I was still under the std 12 month manufacturer's gaurentee they asked me to call Sony direct, which wasnt a problem (cutting one person/link out of the chain).

Called Sony and they initially wanted to send another mains adaptor - which I agreed to as I was hoping this would solve the issue (as I couldnt remember ever looking in the socket originally to see what it looked like anyway so had no comparison).

A new mains adaptor arrived (very quickly it has to be said, within about 24 hrs), but this made no difference at all and connector stil wiggles / battery still discharges unless connector is in perfect position. I reported this back to Sony, who now want £80 for shipping costs and engineering time just to inspect it, even before they give me a bill for parts I might need (they wont give an estimate at all, or even put me through to an engineer until Ive had the laptop taken away and inspected). Of course by that time I will have to pay them , even if its just £80 just to get my laptop back

I havent agreed to this at all as I dont believe I should be charged at all within the first 12 months for such a fundamental part to a laptop.

As an FYI - the machine has always been well cared for, there is no damage to the outside chassis of the laptop or around the socket area, so they cant accuse me of mistreating the laptop or anything like that.

Ive since gone back to the shop in question, who have seemingly mis-spelt my name on the system (which is why it didnt come up originally) - but they have asked me to call up "returns" on Monday - although all they will do is return it to Sony in any case - but I now have print out which proves I am on the system with all relevant laptop info included

As its under the initial 12 months gaurentee (although with two weeks left or so I dont have much time to sort this out);

1) I dont believe I should be charged at all - but Im caught between a rock and a hard place if I agree to have it sent back and Sony want to charge me anyway........so what can I do?

2) As I am returning it to the shop in question, can I insist on an immediate exchange or something?

I didnt buy any kind of extended warrenty at the time (and I dont have the money for one now, or even the original £80 + parts cost Sony want either)

Any info would be appreciated thanks

What's the model? VGN -....

Sounds like a weak solder join on the DC jack. I'd just get a new jack (£2 -£15ish) or hit the old one with a soldering iron. Seen a few recent Sony laptops and all of them had the DC jack on a small cable, so replacing it should be childs play if you get nowhere with the warranty

Sorry I dont understand where you mean by the dc jack as the cable /psu has been replaced whcih made no difference at all.

There is nothing evident that requires soldering on the laptop itself - and when looking at a more recent sony model in the shop it seems to have a (plastic?) tube for the mains connector to slot precisely into, which mine is missing.

Personally see noreason why Sony developed the socket as large for such a small connector so that this cone is necessary to start with

AFAIK you can't insist on immediate exchange, it was not DOA and they have a right to send it in for repairs.

The shop cannot charge you anything for sending it in, though I am less sure about Sony.

In any case my advice is go through the shop since your contract is with them.

If it was out of gaurentee I wouldnt have an issue (even though I never buy from ebay, pet hatred) - but they should do it for free surely in the first 12 months?

cheers everyone

Yes Sony are doing exactly that

Im going to try and persaude Sony / the shop to send me a dc jack for free as Im more than happy to fit it myself ......Ive got a horrible suspicion they wont though

broken socket = laptop abused

99 times out of 100 it will have been broken by the user so not covered by warranty unless the shop are in a good mood
