Due to the edge-lit implementation of current PC monitor LED backlights the black level won't be any better than a standard CCFL backlit monitor, since the "full array" backlighting technology that gives some higher-end LED backlit LCD TVs their excellent black levels and true contrast ratios has not crossed over to PC monitors yet. (some more info here)
As for panel technology, TN and IPS are roughly equivalent in terms of black depth. However TN panels are more responsive, while IPS panels offer more accurate colour reproduction and much wider viewing angles. However, VA panels are quite a bit better than both of these technologies for black level and contrast ratio - but tend to be less responsive than even IPS (so you may see ghosting) and their viewing angles are better than TN, but not as good as IPS.
Then you are currently sitting on either a VA or S-IPS panel (I believe there was a panel lottery with that monitor), but bottom line it is a high quality non-TN panel with a CCFL backlight.
I would suggest upgrading to a new IPS (or possibly VA) monitor or you will see drop in image quality. I would suggest IPS, since they are more suited to gaming due to faster response times. The Hazro HZ27WC is pretty nice.
