Source is indeed very dated now. Even in Episode 2 (back in 07?) I found that it lacked any degree of "wow" whatsover. Considering by the time new Valve games come out, the engine is going to be like 8 years old!

CS felt its most popular and fun for me between beta 7 and version 1.3 in my opinion, and I personally would like to see that side of CS back again.
Any serious FPS gamer grew up on CS. When CSS came out it was a step back in game play to look pretty, which it did at the time. i doubt this will inspire the players to leave BF3 or COD, niche players are still playing 1.6 anyway.,..

If you look at the steam stats
current peak today

10,265 22,680 Terraria
6,805 13,830 Left 4 Dead 2
5,792 13,861 Fallout New Vegas
more people still play CS 1.6
Only one server really works for me that great. The OCUK one is ok but often when I look down to wonder why I couldnt hit I see choke has registered which makes playing for that minute slightly pointless
The server I do best on I can literally run rings round some players which I realise is not because Im great but mostly this lag issue except its to my favour there
CSS was flawless when it first came out, I found the lag appeared some years in after an update.
Anyway I prefer CSS because it often has FF on and its more about tactics and less about precision HS and fine tuning the network code. It either works or it dont

No from those stats all you can determine is that more people who play games on a Monday morning play 1.6.
in the evening css over takes it.
Yes but its far from a niche who play the game
