Google buys Motorola For $12.5 billion

That's BIG news. I wonder what this means for the other Android OEMs? I wonder how much of Motorola's patent portfolio is included in the deal (I see that Google are only buying the Mobility chunk of Motorola)?

Its going to be run as a separate division !

The acquisition of Motorola Mobility, a dedicated Android partner, will enable Google to supercharge the Android ecosystem and will enhance competition in mobile computing. Motorola Mobility will remain a licensee of Android and Android will remain open. Google will run Motorola Mobility as a separate business.

Its going to be run as a separate division !

Why wouldn't they be?

I really like a lot of the handsets Motorola have built (owned both the Milestone & Defy) but where they fail is in European support.

Hopefully this take over will kick them up the bum to change that and also mean that some high end handsets will be coming with stock android.

Manufacturers are clearly seeing this as a defensive move to protect Android.

Should be interesting. I see Motorola Mobility also includes digital video systems so perfect platform for pushing Google products across the complete user spectrum under one company.

Oh Noes, what's going to happen to motoBLUR? :(

There's still a rumor around that TI is looking to sell its successful OMAP division (while its hot) Intel and AMD were thought to be the main contenders, but now...

Big news indeed.

Wow, at a premium of 64%. Google still has tons of £££.

I wonder what Samsung is thinking now.

This was my first thought too I must admit. That was some price but how much is the price of having a portfolio that includes 2/3/4G patents when you're looking down the barrel of impending law issues on many fronts?

Google was involved in the Nortel patent bidding, but refused to join the Apple-led consortium that ultimately won.

I know they bid but werent they making 'silly' bids with random numbers or something?

I was thinking they maybe got involved to drive the price up for the others but never actually intended on buying as they will have known back then that they were going to buy Moto. Plus putting in a couple of non-serious bids may have been a red herring to throw people off the fact they were lining this up.

Probably complete rubbish but just what popped into my head when i heard this news :D
