Cat5e cable outside the house.

I have some CAT5e UTP runs on sun facing side of the house... been there for almost 10 years now. No problems.

I had a cable outside from my house to neighbours house for 12ish years and it's been fine. Never caused any problems apart from stiffening up. The outdoor cat5e cable I think is just more UV resistant.

I've seen normal CAT5 last outside for years, so it would be fine. Personally I would use the better protected outdoor cable but thats just me.

Yeah I have had a cable at me parents house for over 6-7 years out side not even in trunking and its still goes strong.

Not saying it will last much longer but meh.

Its fine outside, laid some in my previous job and it was fine after 5 years, put one in outside the house linking down stairs to upstairs and also fine after 2 years. No trunking on either.

Normal UTP is fine so long as it's the proper solid core decent stuff.

You can get "outdoor cable" though it's just been tested and tends to be a different colour and they charge you 50% more for it. The actual cable itself is pretty much identical to your normal UTP.
If you're at all worried it's actually probably cheaper to sheath UTP than buy outdoor rated Cat5e.

when i was 15/16 broadband just came out and my m8 who lived 30meters away from on the other side of the street got it, his connection speed was 512kbps.
I back then could not pay for my own BB so me and my m8 agreed on our own little deal. I brought 50meters of cat5e cable to run from my house to his house.
we run it over the phone lines so it had some support. still to this day 8-9years on its still there

I ran solid core Cat5e round my house almost 3 years ago and it's still going strong. Luckily I already had holes drilled in my walls from Sky TV so threading the cable through was pretty easy.

proper outdoor cat5 is also shielded, but its ott for most needs, normal cat5 will be fine for running outside

External grade network cable has a much heavier (and UV resistant) sheath. It also tends to be black so it blends in better than standard white/grey network cable does. Apart from that it’s identical.

I’m sure it’s available in STP and UTP versions, but the stuff I’ve used was normal UTP.

Complete external cabling kits in various lengths are available for a reasonable cost.

what is stp and utp ? shielded and unshielded ?

Is there any advantage to one to the other?

Yes, shielded and unshielded.

Shielded cable is useful in electrically noisy environments. It’s very unlikely you’d ever need it in a domestic or normal office environment. The one time I have seen it used was for a cable that had to cross a factory floor where they were using a lot of machine tools.

I've got around 50m of standard CAT5 running outside my house, no trunking used. I installed it over 10years ago and have never had a problem with it.

If I was going to re-cable, I would probably use CAT5e or like others have said "outdoor grade" CAT5. Just to be on the safe side.
