Mid To Low High End Card Needed!

Hey Guys

Go easy on me here please, been out of the PC building arena for a good few years now, so not up to date on the latest kit etc!!

Just upgraded to I would say a kinda mid-range system.

AMD 2.8 Phenom x 6 CPU
4 Gig of DDR3 Kingston Ram
MB is an Asus M4A88T-M
Antec H620 Water Cooler

I am looking to buy a card that would compliment my system, and allow me to play hopefully BF3 at around 1440 x 900, med to high settings! Basically as long as games would look good enough and not lag!

Would probably prefer to go ATI, since hopefully someone will correct me if I am wrong, as i can use the inbuilt 4350 to run Phxyx, is that correct?

Appreciate any help you guys can give!

Thanks

5850 i would say or a nvidia 460 though you would need to overclock your cpu somewhat from its default.

Thanks mate!!

I'm prepared to spend up to £200..

So would the 6950 1gig be a better future proofed purchase?

Also, do you not think the Phenom cpu would be capable of handling BF3?

Appreciate helping a born again newb out :D

@ Fin

LoL, well spotted matey :D

@ Stone as above for budget, thanks mate!! trying to read up on all the tech I have missed out on!

Audi A6?

At default speeds yes it would handle bf3 no problems but it would bottleneck that card
also 6950 would be a huge upgrade from what you currently have but again your cpu would bottleneck that card even further, and going for the 1gb memory is a waste of time the norm these days is 2gb hell people on these very forums are mouning about the 1.5gb memory on there nvidia cards getting bottlenecked from some games.
though if you wanted to go for that card and future proof it ect get a 2gb version.

Ah, get you now mate!!

So, need to go and read up on OC'ing again now! Used to be simple enough just upping the multiplier :) Guessing it's a bit different these days!!

Ok, you recommend the 2 gig 6850 then, as there is nothing new coming out before the end of October, is there?

So, for shear texture filling the 2gig is the recommended size these days?

Thanks Again

The 2GB 6950 is the best you'll get for £200. There's one on the Today Only specials, buy that one!

You should probaby OC your X6, I haven't had an AMD system for years so I have no idea how to go about it, I'm sure someone more knowledgable than me would be more than willing to help, though.

Also, keeping your old AMD card is pointless, PhysX is an nVidia feature.

2GB card is really not needed at OPs res

a 1GB 5850 would be more than enough for 1440x900.

OP If you want to run PhysX you'll be needing a Nvidia card not AMD.

Appreciate eveyone's answers! I am sure there will be loads more once I get back into it!

Although I have one more question, if I buy an ATI card like the one above, could I use the inbuilt graphics for something, like a psuedo xfire maybe?

I do understand that for real xfire you need two of the same cards!

Thanks

No, I think there are chipsets out there that support hybrid CF/SLi but yours certainly isn't one of them.
