Hi there,

Moving house other the weekend and ordered Sky broadband in preparation. Have never used ADSL before as have been on cable for the last 15 years. Sky have already sent me out their router but I have been reading mixed reviews of it. Do I have to use their router or can I use any ADSL router?

Thank you.

Hi there,
You can use another router but you will have to extract your login details from the Sky router and put them into a different router. Depending on what router you get from Sky, the instructions will differ.

Once you get the router post some pictures and some info on it. Then the forum will be able to help.

+1..the sky router is fine for 99% of people. Why do folks always look to spend extra cash when they are given a perfectly fine router for free?

I've had no issues with my Sky router for the past year and a half.

Had more trouble with my homeplugs than the route!

Use their router and see if it works out for you, if you have to reboot the thing every day then I would buy something more stable.
I have a Belkin and it's miles ahead of the one supplied from Be (Thompson based)

Currently using a D-Link provided by sky.
Not really had any issues with this one other than wireless range.

The sagem one we had last was horrendous, dropped out a lot, wireless was pants and overheated.

I'll have a look into the new one tho :)

Another Dlink router owner here, never a problem.

On another note, sky have been updating firmware (DLink in particular) that has changed the authentication from PPoA to MER.

This seems to have to have changed the way Sky authenticates your router (from username and password to MAC)

...... this seems to be stopping people from extracting their username and password and using a 3rd party router.

Just a heads up.

I Just swapped from the supplied Dlink router back to my old Netgear one and it works fine. I only did this as the wireless on the Dlink would randomly stop for no reason, no drops were reported yet transmissions ceased - plugged in the netgear and works as it should.

It was a bit tricky getting my password off of the dlink router, but it is doable.

I've had a lot of problems with my own Sky router (Netgear DG934) and even after having it replaced twice it still sometimes stops passing traffic all together and requires a hard reboot. I only used it as a modem with DMZ to another device.

Two other guys at work use the same model and have problems with that and the WiFi dropping out etc. Another one has Sagem and he's always having problems with it loosing connectivity.

I don't know if we've all just been unlucky but I've heard nothing but bad things about what Sky supply. I would sack off your router and take a look at this:
