GTX 580 Overclocking - what can you get in fussy game

both of those seem low volts again for 900 - 2 good cards again obviously

what fan profiles are you running and what temps are you getting?

For 900 / 2150 1.1v my fan is set to 80 whilst gaming can't hear it with headphones on and hasnt went over 67c yet whilst playing BC2 maxed out. It's currently idling at 31c with the fan set to 50.

I do have a fan positioned so it blows air over the card which does help:

just run Heaven a few times 900 /2100 - it was stable @1.1 but I saw a blue sparkly
upp'd to 1.13 and it went throught without.

34 idle fan 80% - max temp 60c so the 2.5x slot cooler does work well

I am assuming you have tried upping the volts mate - I have read a lot about msi cards needing more volts than stock

They do indeed, not just MSI, all manufactures, see my post above about it. As for your overclock, it's exactly the same as mine. I would expect you to get a random crash ( sometimes I could play for 2 hours before it happened) in Crysis 2 DX11, then up to 1.125V you go :).

I was running 1.125 that is stable - just changed my afterburner to the new one (beta) to see if it would make a difference or if I could unlock the voltage control

it was dropping out yesterday on thge older 20.05 beta afterburner

new beta is 220

what are those yellow fans??

I am assuming they make a positive diference to cooling
I tried the Noctua NfP 12 Fans that I alreayd had but they were worse than the corsair ones by a lot (H80).

I've been running my PNY at 900/2100 1.088v since i got it.

Not had anything that doesn't like it yet.

it amazes me sometimes the differences in cards

we have just concurred that our cards need 1.125 for 900/2100
1.088 is loads lower and the card costs about £50 less than ours

Mental!!

Indeed.

I also very much agree with the comment from VortX about OC'd cards running fine for a while and throwing a wobbly after 1 or 2 hours strenuous game-play. Even mine at 1.078v 860 core (which I thought was 100% stable), black screened (IE. driver stopped responding) after about and 2 hours of Crysis 2. Fine if you are prepared as some are to have the occasional "outage" and accept it like that. Again it very much comes down to what you as an individual are prepared to accept as "stable".

I also pretty much agree with the comment that it's just not MSI cards that have come with vids to low to support the OC on a card. I speak from experience re Gigabyte on this issue. It just happens that there are a number of comments about this issue on earlier MSI 580 GTX OC Twin Frozr cards floating around on the net. At least MSI pretty promptly offered a BIOS upgrade for that card and later ones already come with the voltage bumped to either 1.024 or 1.038v.

Now temperatures.... I don't know what anyone else thinks. But I always feel that people (including me) quoting load temps, is to a certain extent pretty meaningless. As no two installations are the same. IE.difficult to compare as you are not comparing like-for-like. Ambient temp obviously plays a big part in the equation. My card is currently running a good 10 degrees cooler than it was a week or so ago (bloody freezing up here in my part of Scotland at the moment). Also when are you taking these temps? During a bout of gaming, while this is probably "real word", the load tends to be all over the place. After looping something like 3Dmark11, or Heaven 2.5 for a couple of hours can get them a fair bit higher (as heat obviously builds up in the case). But these then sometimes get dismissed as not realistic temps. Difficult subject really.

I was mentioning the temps as way of comparing the stock cooler vs the monster direct cu 2.
Its impossible to gauge as you say - even from reviews.
What has impressed me is how good the job the stock cooler does with a decent air supply in a good case - 1 above looks like a Corsair 650D - a good case

This is the profile i have setup for 900/2100 1.88v.

Yeah, i had a previous PNY 580 before that done the same as well.
