Going to a festival next weekend with a couple of mates. We have got a huge bell tent, more like a yurt than a tent. My mate's dad (an engineer) has custom built us a wood burner for inside the tent (it's 5m in diameter and 11ft tall) with custom flue and chimney etc.

It all looks pretty safe and he has built many before.

We're aware, however, that accidents happen, and I want to buy a small but adequate fire extinguisher to have in the tent just in case it does go belly up.

What kind of extinguisher would I need? How big would be suitable?

Thanks

EDIT: Bell recommend this extinguisher - what are your thoughts?

This thread interests me as I know nothing about fire extinguishing except that I really should get a small one (or two) for the house.

I have 2 of them I got from Aldi for £6.99 each. They are powder, and would be fine for tents. I have one in the kitchen.
I also have a CO2 one, but the smallest of these can be quite large. This is for the laser cutter, just in case! I would not recommend CO2 inside a tent.
You could also use foam or water on a log burner, but the mess it would make in this case, I would not!

You do of course realise, that you cannot have any fires at festivals right?

LOL

I personally wouldn't bother, chances are when the stewards do their walk around they'll notice the chimney bellowing out smoke, and tell you to remove it.

You're allowed fires at Leeds festival, but again, I think even the stewards would draw the line at having fires inside tents, and if one of my neighbours had one, I'd report them as a fire hazard personally.

Here's where the invention of the disposable BBQ comes into action, best £3.99 you will ever spend, I put 4 of them together and cooked up a feast for 12 of us at a festival........Plus the bucket of water idea puts them out in seconds

I'm a firefighter and the advice nowadays is to not have extinguishers, if you see a fire your priortiy is to leave the room, close the door and get your family and yourself out.
If it is something small like a piece of paper on fire and you feel confident and something like a glass of water will easily put it out then fair enough but if you need to resort to extinguishers this is too much.

Without training a lot of people fail when attempting to use extinguishers or fight fires and if they have now been overcome by the smoke no one is going to raise the alarm to anyone else in the property.

If fires are allowed then you'll be ok, wood stoves in tents are reasonably common outside the UK and completely safe as long as you're well ventilated. I'm actually looking at making my own tipi and stove for winter camping over here.

Assuming your stove is like this and you have a fire retardant stove jack where the chimney leaves the tent you'll be fine, as for an extinguisher I seem to remember water is recommended for fabrics, so there you go.

Yeah you can have fires at shambala as long as they're off the ground (hence the burner).

Bucket o' water is not such a bad idea tbh :D

I will pop to aldi later and see what they have too.

FWIW - Tent and burner (unfinished):
