Human Rights Concerns Over Riot Punishments
SkyNews said:
Human rights groups have criticised the severity of some of the sentences handed down to people involved in last week's riots.

On Tuesday two men were jailed for four years after pleading guilty to inciting disorder via a social networking site.

Jordan Blackshaw, 20, and Perry Sutcliffe-Keenan, 22, used Facebook to incite violence - but no one responded.

Their jail terms are the most severe yet to be handed out by the courts following the riots in London and other English cities.

Andrew Neilson from the Howard League for Penal Reform said: "The public disturbances are seen as an aggravating factor and that is fair enough.

"But there seems to be a complete lack of proportionality to some of the sentences.

"These make a mockery of proportionality, which is a key principle of the justice system."

The court heard Cheshire Police discovered a Facebook event entitled "Smash Down Northwich Town" created by Blackshaw, who is from Marston near Northwich.

I say good on the judges, make an example out of these scumbags.

I'm a lefty and reasonably liberal but if these scrotes had got 20 years I wouldn't be batting an eyelid.

**** em.

couple of weeks back the whole nation was in anger over the riots...now the media are making out these weasels should get lighter sentences. GTFO

the whole justice system needs to take a long hard look at what it does, and this is a good start!

Indeed, it's nothing to do with the donut, it's taking advantage of the situation and being part of the looting problem.

I can't find anything on google, perhaps someone had got their wires crossed when they told me.

If it was true, in many ways you are right. But on the other hand... it is a donut. I'm very aware of how public order offences work, but there should be an overarching degree of common sense when a crime is so obviously petty it just shows a lack of momentary common sense from that person.

Somebody damages property and breaks into a shop to steal - they are the most serious case from the London riots and should be dealt with harshly by the law.

Somebody who walks past the riots astounded and sees a lone dvd on the floor that someone has dropped, so shrugs and takes it - not even in the same league as the above. Prison for that would be ridiculous.

I can't say I know of any specific examples from the riots to be honest.

Typical they break the law but their human rights are such that they could probalbly appeal and get a reduced sentance, crazy.

Ok so I'm gonna say it, what about the human rights of the victims...?

prisons are nice and comfy in this country anyway its more of a holiday to some people and a chance to catch up with mates...

i have a few old friends on facebook who are obviously serving prison time as you can tell by the photos they post they are obviously from inside their cell no one decorates their house walls with loads of photos of family without putting them in frames first

Theft is theft surely?

You would not get jail time for waltzing to tesco and stealing a donut. It just would not happen, unless you had already commuted previously related offences.

You would probably at absolute worst end up with a fine, let alone a community order, let alone a custodial sentence.

Theft isn't just theft - for example, stealing from the vulnerable or damaging property in the meantime / burglary make theft a morally worse act.

4 Years in the nick will cost us tax payers thousends....... yea make an example and punish them but better if they had to coff up and pay huge fines or my idea of hitting them where it will hurt like take 20% of any future wages or benifits they would get. back into the system.....

Some critics of the "harsh" sentences say the judicial lawbooks have been thrown away when these heavy sentences have been given. The lawbooks need updating then. The chaos these riots brought, the scumbags deserve it.

May their back doors be forced open and pounded daily!
