My 51 plate 1.4 Focus was written of last week and I need a new car. preferebley a diesel with doing 1k miles a month, I know it's not a lot and may not warrant a diesel but I'm trying to cut costs

When I had my 1.4 Focus work was less that 5 miles away so was ideal, now I do roughly 1k a month and think a diesel would be the way forward.

I have a child so wan't something with a bit of space, a few have mentioned the 1.5 Megane diesel would be ideal and they do appeal to me however 4 people I know have suggested they have a lot of electrical problems and should look at other cars.

Th Focus was my first car so I don't want another, I have also looked at the PUG 307 which again seem the right size, cheap to run but don't know much more about them.

I have also looked at VW Golfs but they are expensive for what they are, even though everyone I know says they are very reliable as long as they're looked after, even with 100k plus miles.

I have a low budget of 2K.

I read the same in various trade mags. Said mags don't rate Renault dealers too.

2K you'd probably be looking at a Mk4 Golf which isn't as reliable as people like to make out.

I know it's a cliché here, but how about a Mondeo. Should be able to get a tidy one with a lot of life left in it for that sort of money.

On diesel vs petrol don't forget to factor in the increased cost of buying, and if your mileage is mostly urban, you'll also need to budget for possible DPF or DMF failure which will wipe out any money you may have saved on fuel.

How about a golf mkIV with a boot? I.e., a mkI skoda octavia. Taxi drivers' favourite, and the 1.9l TDI engine is pretty cheap to fix should it go wrong.

Also fuel injectors.

Yeah the Octavia with the older, less fancy, engine would be a decent buy if you really must have a diesel.

When we were looking for a car a while back we went into a Renault dealership. The guy did say the previous couple of generations of Renaults have been plagued with problems. Though he also said Renault have ploughed huge amounts of money into making sure their new models are trouble free.

I have had a Megane II 1.9 DCi 120 3 door for the past four years as my car. If you buy a megane diesel make sure you get the 1.9 as this has Nissans F9Q engine.
Avoid the 1.5 dci as this engine is made by Renault and is not so great.

Meg's are soft on suspension and are pretty wide for a hatch back. They tend to wallow around a lot on the road but it's lovely over rough surfaces and pot holes perfect for sleepy Monday mornings driving to work.

I have had no problems with the car. Everything I have replaced has just been wear and tear stuff. I have had no problems with it what so ever. Even with a 150bhp remap. The card start is a pain is the arse as the card is too big to go in your wallet. Too big to go on your keys. You have to carry it around separate.

Just traded it in for an Alfa 147 and will be sad to see it go tomorrow. But looking forward to being in the Alfa club lol.
