Hi Guys

We recently just got my father in law an Iphone 4 for his birthday. He’s since rang orange to ask for a microsim and they’ve said they’ll have to move him onto an Iphone contract and up his contract by £10 a month. My girlfriend on o2 didn’t have this problem when she changed phone.

Is this a standard Orange policy? Other than cutting the sim (which he won’t be a fan of) the only alternative appears to be to sell the phone and buy him a 3GS so he can use his normal sim

Which contract is he going from and to? Is he at the end of it? It is a policy I can confirm but it highly depends on the from and to as to how it works. You can just chop up the sim though, a template and a steady hand is all you need.

I'm not sure what he's on at the moment but i know he's not long upgraded (he's been with Orange for around 10 years i think) but he just wanted to stay on his existing contract i think.

Will try and talk him around cutting it up

Ask to borrow his phone and then do it quickly ;)

Why would he not be a fan of cutting the sim? If it breaks just ring Orange for a free replacement.

Complete scam otherwise... there should be no difference between a normal contract and an iPhone contract.

That sounds like a standard thing from Orange there. I bought a SIM free iPhone 4 when they were launched and Orange wanted an extra tenner a month claiming that even if I cut the SIM to the correct size the services on that SIM would ensure the iPhone 4 wouldn't work. I remember asking the support droid how the SIM dad been feeding an HTC Desire smartphone for the prior 6 months and they were clueless!

Needless to say I cut the SIM and it all worked perfectly. I told them that when the contract finally expired and I left Orange for Voda. If they hadn't tried to take the p and fleece me out of an extra tenner a month I would still have been with Orange.
