Whats the best bike for £1000 is a bit like what car is best for £1000. There's no one bike, and it really depends on what you want. I know people have already said the camber, but full sus seems a bit of a waste for riding on the local common. In fact, part of me thinks anything for £1k will be a bit overkill.

Exactly what kind of off roading do you intend to do and how often? If its just for the odd ride round a path, of those two the hopper, but you may do just as well on something cheaper and save a few hundred quid.

Little shorter in travel you could have a Boardman Pro FS at £1600, looks to have decent spec, but I don't know anyone who has one or seen one ridden!

Or little longer travel, Commencal Meta 5.5 Team at £1900?

Had a nice ride in Hamsterley forest yesterday with Andeluncheon, Bona* & fatt_msr

Few piccys :D (clipped skies much!!!)

Something like a Hardrock Sport or Pro disc will be <£500 and is more than suitable for starting out, it will be fine for the majority of trail centre runs too. Leaves you with some spare money to buy some kit, different pedals, helmet, gloves, waterproofs etc all add up to more than you expect. Leaves you with a little cash for some upgrades further down the line if you so wish.

I bought my Boardman for £750, and I am glad that I didn't spend more while I was getting into it. I hardly used it for 6 months before getting it out the garage and using it regularly. If I hadn't put the initial effort in then it could have stayed there after only a few rides and would have been wasted money.

Or I could have spent money on something which wasn't suitable for what I wanted to do, now I have been riding for a while I have an idea of what bike I would like to upgrade to and what works for me.

Don't like the geometry of the 5.5, mate of mine rides one and I don't get on with it.

Forgot about the Boardman though, cheers.

Couple of snaps of my new SX Trail, not had chance to ride it properly yet but already got a feeling I'm going to enjoy it more than the Session 8 it's replaced. Few little bits and pieces ordered for it (SS Grips, looking for new shifter atm, old Nano Techs waiting to be fitted) :)

Ace bike Shaun, I've been lusting after the new shape sxt for ages. Word has it you got some extra pennies too? Are you gonna upgrade the SXT or buy another even more pedally second bike?

I don't think I'll be buying another bike with it, I did consider building up a Blue Pig with the money but with things like car tax and insurance round the corner, I'm banking half what I got and playing with the rest, which isn't enough for a second bike I'd want tbh.

As for shifter's I haven't decided yet, all I know is I really don't like the X5 that's on there atm. Ideally I was going to order the Saint M810 but it means a new rear mech, so unless I see one cheap it's a no go, not spending ~£140 just on those 2.

You can get an x9 10speed rear shifter and mech for about £100 now I think which combined with a 36t cassette could get you a really usable gear range (single front ring?) if you're hoping to use this for a bit of trail riding.

Well it's currently got 9spd 34t on there with x9 rear mech. I'm really tempted to just get the X7 shifter that I had on my Session, I didn't have any real complaints about that other than when it fell apart internally on second day of ownership :D

Edit: Meh gone for X7, £28 OEM from Evan's :)

Ouch is all I can say...

My first major off today, trying out a new trial that has been built in the area, first time down, hit a huge burm at full speed, hit a drop off not realising that the mud is still really soft, front wheel beds in and slips right under the bike and I go over the handle bars and land on my face..

Thank god for my full face (which is now cracked around the mouth piece), my nose feels like its been punched hard and both my arms are seriously fubar'd with cuts and grazes, but hey ho I will be back later in the week for a second run :-)

Right, decision time chaps, which of these two:

Lapierre Zesty 214 or Canyon Nerve AM 7.0

The Canyon has by far the better spec but is £200 more, however still a bargain for what you get. However, every Zesty rider I speak to says it's the best bike they've ever ridden (even though this is the base model, I can upgrade bits as I go where needed).

Thoughts?

tough call but i personally like the look of the canyons better but it's each to their own i guess. Enjoy which ever one you get!

I've always liked the look of the Lapierre and have hovered over the 'Buy It' button a few times, but out of these two I'm leaning towards the Canyon still. I've emailed their UK support to see what they offer in terms of backup if anything should go wrong so watch this space...

I love Lapierre bikes and would have chosen the Lappy myself, though I cant.deny the Canyon's value for money

It's almost too tough to call now the price is the same. I've had an email from a chap at Canyon UK saying any warranty issues would be dealt with in this country, just waiting to hear about availability on suspension bits such as bearings/bushes etc before I make my final choice.
