Handing a 40" TV on Metal studs/plasterboard?

Hi there

I was going to put up my tv onto the wall but found out I have metal studs instead of wood. Can these still be used to support a 40" TV?

A 40" doesn't weigh much so just get some plasterboard fixings. It'll be fine aslong as it's not a full motion bracket. Some M8 spring toggles will do the job.

you spread the load over several fixings and it should be fine.

OR get a stud detector - find the studs and screw into the wood...

have a 50 inch on a platerboard wall with just rawl plug plasterboard fixings and a 40 in the bedroom. Havent moved and been there 2 years

But yeah, screw into the metal studs with some deep thread self-tapping screws and it'll hold a tv fine.

I wouldn't rely on just going into the plasterboard if it was my TV.

Ok I already have some of those rawplugs. How about drilling through the metal studs. Then use the selfdrill raw plugs as added support?

You can hang on plasterboard no problem. I've had an old 48" plasma hanging on the plaster for about 4 years and that thing weighs a flipping tonne. Absolutely rock solid. Just make sure you use anchor screws rather than just screwing into the plaster itself and expecting it to hold.

Yeah I saw them. They look solid. Should help distribute the weight more evenly with them.

Mark A - the traditional method is timber and board...I really doubt they are metal though?

They definitely are metal as I put a hole in and can see them. It is a newish buiild property if that makes a difference.

Studs are either 400mm or 600mm apart. Measure and have a look at the next one.

i wouldnt risk hanging my tv on any wall let alone just plasterboard

The wall is only about six foot. I can see the other side of the wall from the hole and they are definitely metal. Would they have metal in the middle and wood for the rest?

The metal could be containing cables and the actual structure of the wall is timber.

Most stud work in concrete frame buildings are metal stud, you'll only find timber in timber framed buildings, the proper way is removing a section of plasterboard and patress out in between the studs with ply then replaster.

Depends though, if you have a lightweight tv on its own without pivot and swing then you should be ok just picking up the studs, if you have a heavier tv and a pivot bracket with a ps3, Apple tv and kinect hanging on the back I would make the effort to do a bit more

Lol no, do not do this. Only a complete idiot would hang something so heavy on board alone.

Most of the metal studding I have seen are like meccano with sets of predrilled holes so they can just assemble like lego.

I wonder if yours is like this. If so it would make it easy to mount bracketry into the stud with proper metal stud fixings rather than relying on self tappers etc.

Is there masonry directly behind the metal studding? or is this a partition wall?
