480 v 570

If the power consumption, potential extra noise from the fan and/or warmer running doesn't bother you AFAIK theres no other major drawbacks.

The GTX 480 stock cooler is also a good deal louder than the stock GTX 570.

Given the choice between the two (if they have stock coolers) then I would certainly go with the GTX 570 (assuming they are priced around the same level).

However, if the GTX 480 comes with a nice custom cooler like the Gigabyte Windforce then the noise argument is not an issue - since that cooler (and similar ones on other brand cards) is much quieter than the stock GTX 480 cooler (and the stock GTX 570 cooler for that matter) and keeps the chip cooler than the stock one as well (though it does exhaust the majority of the air into the case, compared to the stock coolers which exhaust the majority out of the back).

The refurb 480 is 161 and the refurd 570 is 210 so the 50 pound difference could easily go towards an aftermarket cooler for example. If that's the onyl real drawback then would the 480 be the way to go?

Thanks for the replys.

Yea, that is a pretty fantastic price for the GTX 480 - considering it is only ~15% slower than the GTX 580. Also, as Rroff says the extra VRAM may well be very useful - especially if you play at high resolutions and like to turn up the eye candy (which you will with such a nice card).

Also, as you say - with that price difference you could afford a very nice aftermarket cooler. However, I would leave it at stock for a while to ensure it is running OK and to determine whether you find the noise a problem.

If your into HD content the gf100 based 480 cannot pass lossless hd audio over hdmi, the 570 can. TrueHD/DTS-HD on the 480 will be downsampled.

Prolly better off going to ATI/AMD if you want audio over HDMI tho, not really been nVidia's strong point. The HD Audio drivers do seem a little better now tho.

Was considering the 480 at current price as well. But the mention of audio over hdmi gives me pause.

I won't be using it for watching blu-rays or anything, but I used the hdmi audio out on my 5850 for games, music, etc so I can just use one cable for everything.
