With Bethesda's lawyers sending a strongly worded letter to Notch about changing his new game's name from Scrolls to something else as it may get somehow confused with the The Elder Scrolls he responded by challenging Bethesda to a game of Quake 3.

"Remember that scene in Game of Thrones where Tyrion chose a trial by battle in the Eyrie? Well, let’s do that instead!
I challenge Bethesda to a game of Quake 3. Three of our best warriors against three of your best warriors. We select one level, you select the other, we randomize the order. 20 minute matches, highest total frag count per team across both levels wins.

If we win, you drop the lawsuit.

If you win, we will change the name of Scrolls to something you’re fine with.

Regardless of the outcome, we could still have a small text somewhere saying our game is not related to your game series in any way, if you wish.

I am serious, by the way"

Got to love Notch sometimes, it would be absolutely great if Bethesda took the offer on (even if they lost), it would show great spirit IMO. :p

EDIT: Suffice to say, this legal dispute has just went up a notch. :D

I'd love to have seen their initial reaction to Notch's challenge.

Bethesda: WTF
Bethesda: Erm...hhmmm...
Lawyer: No, (insert lawyer babble)
Bethesda: Shut up, thinking...

That is absolute genius. Gives a massive two fingers to the whole nonsense, while at the same time making Bethseda look like fools when their lawyers inevitably make them refuse.

Copyright lawyers the world over must be aghast at the thought of months of profitable work being decided by an hours gaming :D

This. I doubt Bethesda would need to hire Fa1lt1tty to find some good amatuer talent within their own ranks.

Great story, I don't see Beth taking his offer up though. :(

I would have thought any reputable gaming company would use this to their advantage.

Stream it online, get sponsors for the event.

I expect the viewing figures for this could be HUGE, a real life David Vs. Goliath story plus it would likely spike Quake 3 sales too.

Could actually end up making money for all involved.
