How do,

I'm looking for a new mobile but unsure what to go for! I'm still using my old 8310 and have been since I bought it like 10 years ago?? lol. So I thought to myself it's time to upgrade. I've never had a contract phone for starters but I would look at some of the options other than pay as you go.

So what are my needs?

- Smart phone (touch screen). Ideally I don't want it too big but still, give me all the options.
- I text a lot so I'd want unlimited texts.
- Some free minutes maybe 200 mins.
- Data? I've no idea what this is and how much is enough so would appreciate what you peeps have and how much you use. I'd just want to check Facebook and the odd browse of the internet.

I want to spend ~£20pm on nothing more than 18/24month contract.

Any ideas? As you can see mobile phones isn't my expertise. :)

If you want an Android phone, it's between the Galaxy S II and HTC Sensation, there are plenty of deals on here for around £20-25~ per month - http://www.buymobilephones.net/

They are 4.3" but they really aren't that big. Under those, the HTC Incredible S and Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc are both decent options. All of them are overkill for the odd bit of browsing and checking Facebook, but there we go :p

I think the iPhone would suit you best but it's out of your price range. Any questions, just ask.

If you're happy with 24 months how about a Samsung Galaxy S II? Over 24 months you can get 300 minutes, unlimited texts, 250mb data (not so great) for £20.50 on Vodaphone through Dialaphone. Up front cost of £59.00 for the phone as well though.

Might be some deals out there that are more appropriate for your usage though, I'd advise to look around all the various phone sites like mobiles.co.uk, carphonewarehouse.com, phones4u.co.uk etc. I'm sure there's loads I've missed out :p

I've been wanting to ask this for a while, but felt kind of stupid asking :D, so now I've seen some one else mention it I thought I'd just ask :p.

I'm on orange and have (I think, I didn't pay that much attention when starting my contract to be fair as I have access to wifi most of the time when I use my phone and don't really use youtube and what not) 750MB data allowance per month, I think I recall something about free internet/email?

Does this mean that my data allowance is only used when actually downloading stuff, either via market, straight internet downloads, video/audio streaming etc, and that just browsing websites does not come out of my allowance?

I realise that the answer seems really obvious considering what I said about data and free internet but confirmation would be awesome :) (and we can just pretend that we're helping the OP too ;)).

I'm never going to actually get close to my allowance anyways but thought I'd ask while it's sort of related to a thread :p.

@OP I'd agree with robbo (and probably others, forgot what else was posted) and say look at either the SGS2 or the Sensation.

They're both "large" phones, but they really arn't that big, they still easily fit in jeans pocket and even with my small girly hands I can still easily use the phone with one hand.

You should be able to get a decent deal on either of them since you're happy with a 24 month contract :).

Eurgh, why do I always type much longer posts when I'm on my phone :(. I waffle on way too much when I have extra thinking due to slower typing :(.

Email and general web browsing = 500MB is fine.

Fairly heavy streaming, etc = 1GB+ is required.

Obviously that is only when on mobile data, wifi doesn't count (in case you weren't aware, it's obvious but many people aren't sure :p)

Yeah, I knew using wifi was fine :).

So does my general browsing still come out of my allowance? Like I say I thought I remembered seeing free internet/email seperate to my data allowance.

I'm on one of the Orange Panther plans if you happen to know which one that is, don't feel the need to look it up as it's not really that important either way :).

I know it isn't really going to make any difference to me anyways since I always have wifi access, don't stream or download stuff and general browsing uses virtually zero data.

Just thought I'd get confirmation from someone more knowledgeable anyways, whilst it's semi on topic, incase I ever need to download something in the future.

Cheers for the reply btw :).

If you're on mobile data, everything will come out of your allowance - downloading apps, browsing, streaming, etc. Some operators cap certain services but not browsing if you hit the limit, I can't remember which ones they are though (I think, anyway).

And you're welcome!

Ah ok, cheers :).

I was playing with the Optimus 3D a few days ago (at Canary Wharf) and
the 3D is impressive.
I'm still using a Nokia 5800 which keeps switching off so I've been looking too and thin my next phone will be an Android. The Galaxy S2 looks very good too.

Aye, I've got an Optimus 3D and the 3D effect is impressive, but it's impractical and the rest of the phone isn't so great.

I think when you're posting opinions on phones it'd be easier for your fingers if you only said when you don't/haven't had a phone, as theres got to be more phones (atleast the popular/decent ones that we discuss on here) that you own/have owned than those that you don't/haven't owned :p.

Just trying to save you from getting RSI or some other typing related problem :D.

I imagine it will also reduce OcUK's bandwidth costs significantly ;), they may even offer you some hardware as a thank you :D.

Ok, I'll bear that in mind :D

He doesn't want a big phone so unsure as to why people are suggesting the SGS2 and Sensation.

Take a look at the Desire S as mentioned, also the Wildfire S.

http://threestore.three.co.uk/dealsummary.aspx?offercode=24TXT5D128&intid=3mainhplbl10

Seems like a cracking deal.

Since they're the best 2 phones out atm, and that he should easily be able to afford them since he's happy with a 24 month contract despite only wanting to spend £20ish a month, it seems silly not to mention them

Seeing as the OP admitted he didn't know much about phones and may have not actually seen how "big" (IMO they're not actually that big, mine fits perfectly in my jeans pocket, the SGS2 is also VERY light and thin) they are, and if he was to go into a shop and have a look at them he may change his mind, since his opinion may be based purely on peoples opinions online (which lets face it, if someone doesn't like/want a product they often exagerate the parts they don't like about it).

IMO unless you've actually held the phones, put it in your pocket etc., and found out how comfortable you are with it it'd be stupid to not even consider them, considering how much more highly regarded they are compared to other Android devices.

Edit:
Good deal it may be, but I wouldn't touch three ever!

Hah same, although signal is a very personal thing and I'm sure the vast majority of 3 customers are very happy with the signal/service they receive, I've just heard too many people who live both round me and round my family in London (obviously where I'd mainly want signal) say that they get terrible signal everywhere they go.

Obviously that's only in the areas round me/my family but it's the only opinion I have that I can trust for my uses :D.

It's a shame really as they offer basically the same texts/internet as other providers (better in a lot of cases due to FUPs and "unlimited", I believe their text FUP is 5k (i think?) instead of Oranges 3k on text messages, not that I'd use that many, but I like to get the impression that I'm getting my moneys worth :p).

But they offer A LOT more minutes, like 3k minutes for the same price as say Orange would offer 900-1500 depending on how good you are at haggling (again, I still wouldn't use that many, but it'd be nice to know that they're there if needed for no extra cost).

Poor signal and dropped calls come second to their atrocious customer service. It is seriously bad.

, from what I've been told about their signal by family that's saying a lot, you/someone/people you know must have had ****ing terrible service :(.

Shortest post by me tonight \o/, my screen (and I'm sure anyone that actually bothers reading my posts :p) will be happy for the break :D.

There are plenty of issues with customer service on all networks. In my experience O2 are the best, and then everyone else is tied with T-Mobile in close second place, just about.

As with any company, there are good and bad CS agents, it's the luck of the draw who you get to deal with. With regards to dropped calls and signals, that all comes down to your area and individual mast.

The mobile phone networks are dodgy characters - it's that simple :p
