can't connect to my tv via hdmi, probably me being stupid

basically i am using a gtx 460 graphics card and an msi h55m e23 motherboard,

my tv is a newish toshiba (probably 3-4 years old),

i bought a cheap hdmi cable (like £3.50 off ebay) it is normal hdmi not mini, there is a normal hdmi port on the back of my computer near the line in/line out stuff, there is also a mini hdmi port next to what i assume is the dvi port (which my monitor plugs into, its quite old)

when the cable is connected to both the tv and computer nothing is recognised, i assume its because i need an hdmi to mini hdmi cable (which i assume would connect to the graphics card?)

im just making sure before i buy a mini hdmi to hdmi cable and find out that i didn't need to

Yes, you need a mini-HDMI to HDMI cable to connect between the graphics card and the TV. Did you not get any type of adapter in the box with the GTX 460?

If you connect any video cable to your motherboard while your graphics card is installed then you will always get no signal - as the onboard GPU is automatically disabled.

If you're plugging a full size HDMI connector into the socket near the audio connectors then that's for the onboard graphics and not the GTX 460.

If you want to use the GTX 460 then you need a mini HDMI to HDMI cable or a Mini HDMI to HDMI adapter so you can use the cable you have.

I'm assuming you've stuck the HDMI cable to the motherboard? If you're not using an i3 with built in GPU then that is why nothing is being detected, as there is no i3 GPU there to detect it. You have to connect it to the 460. Seeing as you have a HDMI cable already, all you need is a mini HDMI to HDMI adapter.

A mini HDMI adapter to HDMI adapter should work fine unless you buy a dodgy one. Just buy whatever is cheaper out of the two.

so the adapter came today (which i thought was pretty quick) but the problem still persists, my pc still doesn't recognise that their is a second monitor atall, it says 'display device on ; VGA'

does anyone have any idea's?

Just to check, you have two cables connected to your 460 - One for the monitor connected via DVI/VGA, and another which should be the mini HDMI to HDMI adapter, then the HDMI cable to the TV right?

Also (Assuming you're using Win 7) right click anywhere on the desktop and click screen resolution. Can you see something like this?:

1 should be your monitor, 2 should be your TV. Make sure under multiple displays it's not on "Show only on 1" as that will disable the TV. Change it to "Duplicate" or "Extend".

and yes you are correct, both the monitor cable and the mini hdmi cable are going into the graphics card (gtx 460)

Well it looks like your PC does indeed detect the TV! But for some reason it thinks it's connected via VGA, which is analog and not digital. Sounds like a dodgy adapter/cable if that's a case

Just wondering why you are not trying to set up your displays in Nvidia Control Panel.

Also, is there an option in bios to select external pci-e, or is it just auto switching?

i found a hdmi to dvi connecter laying around and it worked straight away, obviously there is no sound though, so im using an aux cable from the computer to my speakers (a big ipod docking station), however the cables look really untidy, so what cable do i need to send sound to my tv as it would be a lot tidier and neater

optical. Providing the mobo has one.

Glad to see you got the TV working now. Do you know where you got the adapter from? If it came with the 460 then there's a chance you just have to set it as your default sound device in Windows. Right click the volume icon in the notification area, then pick playback devices. Pick Nvidia HDMI output and click "Set as Default" (Not sure on this as I'm using an AMD card but I would imgaine it would be the same). Hopefully the adapter will then convert the sound signals from the card through the DVI port to the TV.
