Hi all,
i've managed to reach 5ghz stable on my i7 2600k but at quite a high voltage of 1.490. It seems stable and is cooled by a corsair H100 so heat is not an issue but i am aware that the maximum rated voltage for the i7 is 1.51 volts and during periods of heaving load (prime95 for example) CPU-Z shows the voltage reaching 1.52. Currently all the intel energy saving features are turned off (C1E, speedstep etc) so the cpu is pretty much running at 1.49 volts and jumping to 1.52. Do you think this is too high? Should i back off a little or would you guys deem this acceptable?

1.5 is a high voltage. Most of us stick to 1.35 > 1.40 tops. The long term effects of running 1.5 on the vcore is relatively unknown at the moment. People seem to be getting away with it but who knows in 6 months time :D

I run 4.5 @ 1.32. With more cooling I would be happy maybe up to ~1.4 but would never go higher.

Have you tried running a lower voltage and retaining stability?

Any lower voltage and Prime95 blue screens or the computer instantly reboots. Temp wise, i've not seen it go over 80 degrees.
Maybe i'm just aiming too high?

I guess the question is what are you doing that needs it at 5ghz 24/7 that you cant do with it at 4.5 ?

80 Deg C?

Would never run anywhere near that, ever.

5GHz @ 1.5Volts with temps of up to 80 Deg C is a silly overclock for 24/7 use.

Bump it down to 4.5/4.6 with more sensible figures.

Rightio. Gonna start from scratch again when i get home.
Going to aim for 1.38 v max and just see what i can get out of that.
Cheers for the feedback.

1.52v is not a safe figure when you're overclocking.

Yeah, 1.49 to 1.52 voltage is way too high for my liking.

Although I'm the kind of person who likes to be safe than sorry.

Try starting at 4.4Ghz and 1.275 vcore and slowly increasing them both.

Personally I wouldnt like to go over 1.35 volts on a 24/7 rig. :)

I'm normally the guy that tears into people for being babies with their voltage, but even for me 1.5 at 80deg is a bit much. That being said, there are people who have been running 1.5+ since release, who are seeing no degradation. There's folk who are running much less than that however, who have:confused:.

The 1.51 you refer to....I think you're thinking of the 1.52 which is the rated max VID on the intel spec sheet. Don't confuse that with the max vcore the chip is rated to run safely with, because that's not what it means.

If you don't need 5GHz, then >1.4 should be a safe bet. If you do need the speed, the max I'd run 24/7 would be 1.45 after LLC. It's all just a bit of a gamble.

At 5Ghz I would stay at 1.425v or below. The higher your clock speed, the less tolerance the chip has to heat and voltage. As for the people running 1.5v+ with high overclocks, they most likely don't tax their CPU out very often.

People who clocks at 1.5v are either enthusiasts who runs a very expensive water cooling setup or reviewers with sponsored chips by the tray load! Be safe and stick to sensible voltages of 1.3v-1.4v only for 24/7 use.

4.8 is the sweetspot for these chips under water. I run mine at 1.4v 24/7 and have not seen any degrading since Feb.
