Lord of the Rings blu-ray (EXTENDED VERSION!)

Can't believe the films will be split over two discs. That is a bit of a joke really. Could they really not fit them into one disk? Dump all the commentaries etc to get it to fit?

Another moan but not necessarily about the film itself or quality but how they are treating fans of the films.

Why so bloody expensive?!

Clicky

This is possibly the cheapest I can find at the moment aswell. I pre ordered the standard blu ray release and paid £35, which I immediately sold because they were crap, and the price then plummeted.

I find it quite insulting that the price is this high the extended release, even the Alien Anthology wasn't that high. I'm going to wait for the price to inevitably drop I think and thats only if they don't screw up the transfer!

No wonder piracy is so high. The price simply cannot be justified when they covered the costs of the films years ago, why on earth should we pay 3x the price of the original release for a blu-ray version? Did they re-shoot the entire trilogy or something?

Piracy is high becasue its "free". It could come in at £10 and it would still be pirated.

Would have been a no-brainer at £30 for me - £10 per film not bad - all profit too - will buy it in the HMV christmas sale :p...

ps3ud0

Bloody hell that's steep, think i'll be waiting for a few reviews, in fact a LOT of reviews before i even think about splashing the cash. Or wait a bit longer for the price to drop or go second hand.

The cost, though somewhat steep, is not the main issue for me. It's, the already mentioned, 2 discs per film rubbish that is annoying.

I really want the trilogy in HD so I'll end up getting it. I may leave it for a while and wait for a nice price drop somewhere.

Yes this really bugs me to.

I think what I will do (and maybe a lot of others?) is:

1) Buy films
2) Rip it to uncompressed mkv as a single film#
3) Profit (watch it without having to change the bloody discs)

Win.

Now that this is released, has anyone actually bought it?

What is the quality like? Is it better than the DVD version or the original bluray?

The standard editions are better than the extended. A couple of the extra scenes are good for LotR fans, and the plethora of extras probably make it all worth it, but the films don't seem to work with the added material. The whole structure seems to go, and some of them feel like they weren't even made by Peter Jackson or written by Peter / Fran / Phillipa. I've seen all three extended versions twice and that's more than enough for me.

A couple of extra scenes? We are talking about hours of footage, some consider it essential.

I agree that some of the scenes are strange though, the one were Gandalf is knocked off Shadowfax is completely nonsensical, here you have the commander of Minas Tirith and the only credible threat to the Nazgul, the number one target in this battle in fact, vulnerable just about to be killed, and then the witch king flies off because of a few Rohirrim, just bizarre.

I don't get all the hate for each film being on multiple discs. Seems a bit of fuss over nothing, personally i think it marks a good point to grab a quick snack or get to the loo. It's hardly back breaking labour to swap out a disc
