afternoon all
are we any nearer knowing what card is going to run battlefield 3, I have Asus ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI/HDMI (PCI-Express) I think I'm going to have to upgrade. thanks

On a 14" screen probably be ok but its a bit of a blanket question, resolution makes all the difference. A 4850 is quite an old card i would say no you have no chance unless its a low res on medium to low settings.

How much would you like to spend,Also you should add your rig spec to your signature it makes things a lot easier.

Depending what preferencies you have.

Do you prefer Nvidia cards or happy to stay ATI ??

What is your budget ??

For around 200 you can aquire a 6950 or 560Ti a little more would potentially see a GTX570.

Dont forget that OCuk are doing a great deal on the Nvidia refurb GPUs currently.

why not just save up the money until BF3 is released, that way you get more options as we might see some new cards from AMD around BF3 release date.

I'd say a HD 5870 could do it, depending on your cpu.

I wouldnt, unless he gets a 2gb one for a bit of future proofing but the 6 series is nearing the end now i think buying a 5 series is a tad pointless now. I would drop a 6950 in and assume dropping another in later on

I managed to play BF3 Alpha with my 4870x2 no problem ran just as smoothly as BC2 1920x1080 more or less maxed out. It was my experience that BF3 Alpha spread its demand over my 4 cpu cores better than BC2 did. BC2 seemed to max out my core 4 all the time. Equally a friend also did the Alpha test and his 560ti managed fine.

My 5850 manages witcher 2 at 1080p Max settings (minus ubbersampling of course) so assuming battlefield 3 will be no problem on medium at least. Not much difference between 5 and 6 series as most people have said. Same with BFBC2 main thing that was slowing that down was the CPU, upgraded that and boosh, super frames per second.

Saying that, you would be better waiting for the 7xxx series or Nvidias next offering, they should blow all these cards out the water as we are technically a generation behind being stuck on 40nm chips.

-Edit, what processor do you have?

sorry forgot the build.
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6700 LGA775 "Kentsfield" 2.66GHz (1066FSB)
Asus ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI/HDMI (PCI-Express)
Asus P5Q Intel P45 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
Corsair VX 550W ATX Power Supply (CMPSU-550VXUK)
Western Digital Caviar Black 500GB SATA-II 32MB Cache - OEM
Antec 300 Three Hundred Ultimate Gaming Case
Kingston HyperX 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 8500C5 1066MHz Dual Channel
Pioneer DVR-216DBK 20x DVD±RW SATA Dual Layer Re Writer

I would clock that Q6700 up to 3.4ghz at least. With a 10x multi it will be easy.

Playing the waiting game is up to you but a GTX 480 at 170 is a steal and as fast new gen will be 350 plus

the idea that a 5850/5870 will struggle with bf3 is nonsense. bc2 flies. bf3 wont be much different. assuming quad cpu.
