Newell: We have to convince EA to come back

How Ironic:

"I think Gabe is brilliant. He's one of the smartest people I know," says John Riccitiello, chief executive of one of the world's biggest game publishers, Electronic Arts. "He has some sharp insights for what makes good games and for what's around the corner in technology."

Sums up how stupid E.A are.

Really? My first thought was how full of **** EA are.

Its all about greed. If the link final8y posted is based off real evidence (which I would think it is) then essentially EA are bickering over 30% on the least profitable gaming platform but prepared to bend over and lose 70% to retailers on the hugely more profitable console games. On the day that retail shops are completely out of the loop and consoles use digital distribution you can be damn sure that Sony/Microsoft will take there own cut.

Welcome to capitalism. :p

Think a lot of people are forgetting something very, very important!?!?!

Valve continues to support the modding of PC titles using hammer and generally
encouraging modding of their games to add longevity, community etc...

This used to be true but they've stopped that for quite a few years now. Hopefully they'll get their act together when they release ep3 or something and thus update the SDK, but otherwise I'll eat my hat if you can get faceposer to work properly on windows 7.

Tbh think Valve got a huge jump on the competition with Steam they all missed a trick with just how popular it was going to become.

Everyone else was behind and if you are EA the way to combat that is to release your own service with the big hitting games that you control as exclusives. Gets you the traffic , advertising revenues etc.

Not saying it helps the gamer but its the only thing they could have done being behind in the drd market.

Valve do it better. They are *the* developer that most PC gaming enthusiasts want to have around, they make good games, listen to the community feedback, don't just port games over from console, support the modding community above and beyond what is expected of them and above all, SALES. Lots and lots of sales.

I'm not going to be buying BF3, I would but it if it was on Steam. Surely I cant be the only person thinking this...

Agree valve did it better and because of their history for me always will do.

However devils advocate if you are EA and you have a massive game coming up that most people will want to play you make it exclusive to your new drd service and there goes the traffic through the site and with that the revenues.

I think nobody is in doubt who the better developer/publisher here but if you were wanting to catch up thats the way to do it.

That is one way to do it that requires the least effort & but its not sustainable in making growth that way alone because there simply is not enough massive games like BF3.

The other way is to simply have a service that is as good or better than & they have had more than enough to to try & catch up in that area.

Gaming social clients have been around for years like Xfire, gamespy comrade, & more lately like Raptor, GameTracker ect... & maybe more that i don't know about, steam has made the effort to complete with them & surpass them feature wise, EA on the other hand has not bothered.

Also moving your game collection around & when doing fresh Os installs is much easier with steam & no having to reinstall everything again if a file gets corrupted & inbuilt defrag.

The other handicap is EA will never have a collection as vast as steam if its only going to sell its own games.

Agree 100%. To just pop up and say you want to compete with Steam would require huge amouns of work by EA and loads of product testing and even then I doubt they could reach a level aquired by Valve and Steam (without pretty much just taking the Steam client and slapping EA logos all over it (I am sure they considered this)). So they took the easiest option.

Will people use Origin outside of what they are forced to use it for?
Unlikely. As Sin_Chase said. I browse Steam like I would a shop and buy games there that I wouldn't normally hear about/be exposed to. If Origin really want to compete with Steam they need to have other publishers games on their service and show evidence of massive sales otherwise it is going to be another embarrassing episode in EA's history of DD.

That actually sounds like good idea.

Valve licenses the steam tech to others & you have a separate tabs for each shop in one client.

Of course not so good for Valve as its steams features are part of its value but the its still in Valve's favour because of the selection of games in its store.

Well that sounds like a good idea but if they do that then it begs the question, why don't they just put the games on Steam? But if it was the only way to get EA onboard I could live with a Steam store and Origin store within the same client and a combined library.
