I'm looking to build a cheap home server and I have come up with a couple of builds that look OK to me, but of course there is always the chance that I have over looked something, anyway here they are one Intel and one AMD. AMD one is a little cheaper but only has 4 sata ports for future HDD expansion.

i honestly wouldnt trust the OcUK 500W PSU that comes in those bundles to run those servers. yes it will run them happily for a while, but when the PSU goes bang you will almost certainly need a new motherboard and processor.

something like this will do nicely:
YOUR BASKET
1 x Cooler Master Elite 430 Windowed Case - Black (with 500w Elite Power PSU) £64.99
1 x Samsung SpinPoint F4 EcoGreen 2TB SATA-II 32MB Cache - OEM (HD204UI) £54.98
1 x Intel Pentium G620 2.60GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - Retail £53.99
1 x MSI H61M-P23 Intel H61 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard **B3 REVISION** £44.99
1 x Corsair Value 2GB (1x2GB) DDR3 PC3-10666C9 1333MHz Low-Voltage Single Channel Module (VS2GB1333D3) £14.99
Total : £233.94 (includes shipping : £11.25).

and to answer the intel vs AMD question, intel wins by a loooooong way:

(those are the closest chips i can find to the ones chosen. all that differs is the clock speed by a small amount

*edit*
or, you could go down the super energy efficient route if your willing to spend a little more
(it will also have a slower processor, but i wouldnt have thought that would be a problem)

YOUR BASKET
1 x Asus AMD E35M1-M PRO Hudson M1 Integrated Dual Core Zacate 18W APU SATA-600 DDR3 mATX (Fusion) £109.99
1 x Cooler Master Elite 430 Windowed Case - Black (with 500w Elite Power PSU) £64.99
1 x Samsung SpinPoint F4 EcoGreen 2TB SATA-II 32MB Cache - OEM (HD204UI) £54.98
1 x Corsair Value 2GB (1x2GB) DDR3 PC3-10666C9 1333MHz Low-Voltage Single Channel Module (VS2GB1333D3) £14.99
Total : £244.96 (includes shipping : £11.25).

this processor only uses 18W compared to the 78W of the pentium and the 130W of the athlon

It will just be a machine hooked up to my 60" plasma to watch programs from, play mp3's through the stereo and of course storage for all my stuff that i currently have on my main machine (i7 920@4Ghz. possibly also to run a minecraft server on to save having my machine running all the time.

I see. So more a HTPC with a big disk than what I'd think of as a server.

I'm not trying to be deliberately difficult. The term server gets banded about all over and means different things to different people.

it wont be mkv/bluerays, just over 600Gb's of tv recordings, 300Gb's of mp3's and several hundrd Gb's of game and utility iso's.
I called it a server due to wanting to be able to access any of the files from any of the other machines on the network just like a file server. also running my mincraft server would be a great help too.
if that isnt what a server is then i dont know.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Cooler Master GX 450W '80 Plus' Power Supply £35.98
1 x Xigmatek Asgard Midi Tower Case - Black £29.99

Just as an alternative to the case and PSU for the same price. I used the Elite 430 Bundle for a low end build and it's a good case but looks more like a gaming case while I find the Asgard a bit more subtle and it has full tool-less bays while the 430 only has a limited amount. You do lose the window and LED Fan (you do get a 120mm intake fan with the Asgard, just no LED) but would this be needed for the server style you're after? Asgard case is well reviewed also with only real issue being the PCI slot covers but this is the same on the Elite 430.

Also a more efficient PSU as the one specced is about 70%. From your build you'll need about 250W max so the 450W 80%+ would be more than enough. Will save on electricity if it's going to be on all the time.
