So my 18 month htc desire contract ends in September so i will be looking for a new phone September-November time.

I tend to go for a high end phone seeing as its an 18 month deal at least now!

from what i gather im looking at the:

sony xperia [duo?]
nexus 3/prime?

anything else or is this it for imminent phones?

oh i should have said not apple/iphone, to expensive but more over is the software/itunes issue.

Nokia N9.

I have a SGS2 and it's really very good. I've used quite a few Android phones and this is the first time I would recommend one to anyone. Lag no longer exists. Shame that Android needs such powerful phones (dual core etc) to make it run nicely. Windows is more resource efficient!

Fair enough, just thought I'd mention :) They're really not that bad, I went back to an iPhone 4 after struggling for a few months to type and keep my music organised on a HTC Desire HD.

N9, isn't nokia using just win mo? Not sure about that never used it, one to look at

Sgs2, I've seen it and I'm not the biggest fan of the design, never really liked samsung stuff, bit disappointed that the nexus 3 leis like samsung build

I had the original iphone, but all the ' you musts' from apple make it.a no including itunes and the price even tho its not a deal breaker

Nokia isn't selling the N9 in the UK. (It's like your Desire with a better camera anyway)

If you don't like the SGS2 best get the Sensation or wait until oct/nov/dec for the 720p version.

With the GS2, the build quility is just OK. Why they use cheap plastic for their flagship phone is beyond me. It is unbeleivably thin though.
For me, the screen is at 4.3 inches is just too big. 4 inches is the sweetspot in my opinion.
The GS2 and HTC Sensation are the only 2 Android phones I would recommend. Both are huge though.

Windows phone is taking over from Symbian at Nokia. S40 will still exist for the low end, Meego (N9) is still a side project for them. Windows for everything else.
Most new apps will work on the N9 thanks to the cross platform development system.

It's probably the prettiest phone I've ever seen and the OS just looks stunning. I imagine I'll be picking one up when it's out next month.

Very quick demo:

There are countless more videos on Youtube.

It clearly is a deal breaker :p

Any phone released before the end of the year will not offer any huge improvement over the Samsung Galaxy S II, it's no good waiting.

If not that, then the HTC Sensation. The N9 runs MeeGo.

Also, Eric7, the Samsung plastics aren't cheap, but they are still plastic. Their focus is weight and durability, not perceived quality.

looks like the n9 is off, i thought it was win mo, i dont really want a odd ball OS

looks like the waiting game for me. yes if the sgs2 was metal or at least sturdier i may go for it, but im not a fan of the buttons at the bottom, especially that ugly centre one!

It is extremely sturdy, you just wouldn't think it at first glance.

The Nokia WP7 phone could be out this year, which will likely be similar to the N9 but running WP7.

They're making a Windows Phone version of the N9 (code named Sea Ray ,with the same casing) but it probably won't be out until late October/November, ie for Nokia world.

I'm not saying it's not built well (no creaks or anything), it just doesnt feel nice in the hand. Take off the back cover and it's about as thin as a sheet of paper! This is Samsungs flagship, christ, this is Android's flagship and it deserves to be made of nicer materials.

I know what you mean (even if I don't fully agree). The back cover is super-flexible (you can't break it) though and you wouldn't know how thin it is when it's fitted.

I agree though that both HTC and Samsung need to draw on each others ideas in order to produce a top notch phone. HTC materials and design (to address the perceived quality arguments) with Samsung internals and HTC Sense which you can toggle on and off with ease.

That would be the complete device, for your average person, HTC Sense dramatically improves the perceived quality of Android software, it makes it 'shiny' and adds some consistency :p

yes ive been very impressed with the desires build quality, if htc had a sgs2 equivalent id get it on contract termination!

What is it that stops you getting the Sensation, you could consider that an SGS2 equivalent, the differences aren't all that big.

Never really had much of a play with Sense, always used Launcher Pro with every Android I've had and most mates do too. Does it really add much?
