27 Or 30 Inch Monitor Suggestions

well it arrived today, the estimated delivery bit under the postage cost said 4-6 days so I wasn't expecting it till next week. need to tidy up my desk before I put it on there, will I need to uninstall the Hyundai w240d drivers?

the address label(well plastic 'pocket' with the delivery label put into it) covered up the date on the dell label, can see the work order number fine. Had to take the paper out to see the date(took a few mins to figure out how to get the paper out), says shipped on 14th April so 4months already into the warranty.

I went through quidco when I ordered this, its tracked at £5.95(so just over 1% of the selling price). guess it'll cover the yearly £5 quidco fee.

will update this after I've got it out and had a 'play' with it.

Nope, Windows should show the U2711 driver in Windows update. It will know that the monitor has been changed usually. 4 months isn't bad, considering how much of a saving you had.

Is it still possible to buy the extended 4/5 year warranty on the U3011 if bought from OcUK instead of direct from Dell?

Yes, although phone Dell to be sure. Doesn't usually matter what retailer it was purchased from unless it was a refurb.

I have to say when I had my u2711 I wished I had got the u3011 instead as the dot pitch drops so low due to the resolution they cram into it. It makes viewing the likes of documents and desktop items a bit of an eye strainer.
I ended up just using a 23 and 24 for those activities including surfing the internet as the u2711 was total over kill.

well its up and running, had a bit of a wtf moment when trying to use the old dvi cable as didn't want to open the new one(even used the old power lead). the old dvi turned out to be single link(I thought it was dual link) and was giving pixilated writting etc, all sorted when I connected the supplied cale.

windows didn't install the drivers for it(was showing as generic pnp monitr in the device manager, had to click on the update drivers to get it to do it(isn't there newer drivers then 2009?).

how do you tell if you have a dead/stuck/bright/dark pixel/s?

Hi guys,

I gave in and got the U2711 for £520 from OCUK.

I've had it for a complete day, so here are my initial views if anyone else is considering buying one.

  • No noticeable lagging or ghosting;
  • Nicely built;
  • Looks good, if a little office / industrial;
  • Very good stand, especially the height adjustment;
  • It's wide rather than tall, so doesn't appear as big as you might expect (due to 16:9 ratio);
  • Whites appear very blue (without additional adjustment); and
  • The AG coating is very very noticeable (and I don't usually notice things like that);
I've tried it out with CoD Modern Warfare 2, CoD Black Ops, and Bad Company 2 to give it a test with fast FPSs. It's just fine for these games for a non-competitive player. I haven't noticed any lagging, ghosting or anything else, and I'm playing at least as well as I ever have. The additional widescreen does make a big difference with how immersive the game feels, although as the monitor is not much taller, it doesn't subjectively feel much bigger most of the time.

I find the AG coating pretty horrible, and I don't usually notice things like that too much, and I'm not using the screen for photo work. It's very noticeable with a white Chrome homescreen, and was off putting during the snow levels and cut scenes during Bad Company 2.

Overall, it's quite a nice screen, but I'm seriously considering returning it under the distance selling regulations. Because:

  • The distracting AG coating;
  • The subjective feeling that it isn't a big enough upgrade for the price, due to the impact of the 16:9 ratio; and
  • Overall I'm just slightly unsatisfied with what I've got for the money.
So:

  • Does the U3011 have the same AG coating?
  • Can anyone suggest / recommend / comment on any other 30 inch screens, such as the HP ZR30W?
  • Are they worth the significant price premium? (Near doubling in price)
  • Are there any decent (good enough for my needs) 30 inch TN or 120MHz screens around?
Also, if I do return this screen can OCUK arrange for it to be collected by their courier (if I pay of course).

Thanks,

ejh121

PS. No problem fowler002! I liked your question about dead pixel checking anyway :).

The ZR30W seems quite good for gaming with low input lag but has no osd or scaling chip.
Normally best ips gaming monitors are those that dont have osd or built in scaler which gives it less input lag. Main reason i brought a dell 3007wfp-hc for gaming few weeks ago for £470.

I've almost fully decided to return the U2711, the AG coating is just too annoying, and it just doesn't feel special enough for £500.

From what I can see on the internet, the HP ZR30W is the one to get instead, even though it's almost exactly twice the price.

I don't really care about scalers or inputs, as I'll only be using this on my PC. But low input lag and a less aggressive AG coating are important if I get rid of the U2711. Also, the shiny Dell logo keeps distracting.

Maybe I can get the HP in their firesale! I suppose it teaches me again that trying to do something cheaply never works out well in the end.

Maybe the Hazro 27 inch is worth a look then or even the 30 inch, they do a glass and a non-glass version of the 27. Although you do seem quite fussy (not that it is a bad thing with a purchase of this size believe me), I just think that they won't feel like a quality product after the dell. Either way give the reviews a read and checkout the threads on them on here. They do have their issues but the lack of scaler does improve gaming performance.

I did originally start by planning on buying one of the Hazros, I like the look of the Apple Cinema displays so they seemed attractive.

But you're right, I have been put off my the complaints about build quality. Some people have complained about the reflections from the glass screens, but that may not be a problem for me as I don't have any light behind me.

I've been playing more BC2 tonight and did notice a little input lag on the U2711. It's borderline though, and to be honest I might not have noticed if I wasn't examining this screen so carefully.

I own one as well.

You're seeing the effect of the AG coating every time you look at the monitor because you can't see your face reflected in it.

Spot the difference:

I don't think it's as simple as that. My last screen was matte, without any AG coating. I've never had a glass screen (I can see what you mean about a reflection in a glass screen though).

It really is very noticeable on snow scenes, cut scenes and general reading. I expect that I'd get used to it pretty quickly, but it does detract significantly from the overall quality of the screen.

Nothing's that simple.

Just a quick illustration to give him an idea without getting all technical.

You can see in the picture below a Dell (on the left) with the AG coating removed. It's a lot more reflective.

Yeah I know what it does, just saying I don't personally see any negative effects of the coating, but then I'm no Photoshop expert or anything like that.
