My sisters hubby to be asked me for some help this weekend on a site in London.

He mainly lays floors but does other stuff like that, such as tileing up walls and stuff. Anyway, I accepted as I needed some cash.

Now, I normally sit at my desk every day and moan about how hard my job is and how exhausting it can be... Not anymore!

The weekend started with sleeping round my mums on the sofa as he was staying there as well, I had 3 hours sleep due to the dogs keeping me up. Woke up at 6am on the Saturday, jumped in the van with him and his colleague and headed to London.

Arrived on site around 8am, got stuck in straight away, the work was very physically demanding, I have never sweat so much in my life! Finished around 7:30pm, and head home. Got home around 8:30pm, had a bite to eat then went out drinking in Reading about 11pm!!! Bad idea!

Got home at 4am and again, woke at 6am and repeated the same as Saturday, got home around 8pm.

I have never in my life been so physically exhausted, the work was hard, hazardous, long and over all demanding.

I have a huge respect after dipping my toe into that sort of work for those guys.

I had some great laughs, non stop infact.

So yea! Just thought I would say I will no longer complain about building up a server rack as it's nothing compared lol.

To be fair it sounds like it would have been a lot easier if you slept well.

Personally I would say I would prefer to do manual labour if it paid as well as a desk job. I worked for a year in a brewery before uni, rolling barrels around loading lorries etc I loved it and have never been in better shape in my life.

Haha, yea, I shot my self in the foot by not sleeping properly, but the respect for those lads stays the same!

As for the site, it was a new place for Next, home depo in Hayes.

Being devil's advocate for a moment,

I assume you have a CSCS card, are properly trained, had a site induction & toolbox talks, were aware of the site hazards and not under the influence after a night drinking.

I did some temping years ago over a summer at uni and worked as a dustman, i got a lot of respect for them now.

I've helped fit out a couple of shops in the past. Closing on a Saturday afternoon and having it ready for Monday opening. Carpet tiles, doors, walls, shelving and window display etc. 36 hours non stop.

Very satisfying but bloody exhausting :)

If you can see past the stereotypical image of trademen, ie pervy, loud mouthed con men, there's a lot of them doing good, honest, tough work for long hours and that I have respect for.

Experienced something similar when i was 16/17. I went scaffolding for about 3 months at a huge houseing/flat complex they where building in Nottingham near New College. A lot of respect for the trades people because of it.

I was a labourer for 8 months when I first left college, and I actually really enjoyed it. Hard work, but it was satisfying knowing that I'd earned my money. :)

Agreed. Done it on and off myself a few times. Not only is it nice to know you've actually DONE something, but there are no worries associated with the job. When you're finished for the night that's it.
