Hi guys

I built a box using Gigbabyte H67N-USB3-B3 + i3 + MSI GTX 550 Ti + 2.5' laptop disk(not SSD) on SATA3. I'm running Ubuntu Linux 10.10 and Windows 7 on it.

Everything thing works fine except 2 things

My BIOS is on version F5, the only newer version is F6E and marked as beta bios on Gigabyte's web so I haven't upgraded right away. ------(update) upgraded, no difference.

1. My USB external drive (WD World Edition 2TB w/ USB3), can't be recognized if boot up with it plugged in, and it sometimes breaks USB keyboard and mouse. Plug the drive in after the OS is booted usually works. ------(update) This seems to be driver problem dual boot windows + linux. Windows only seems to work.

I usually use the USB3 port on MoBo. I'm going to try other USB2 ports. ---- (update) all USB2 worked perfectly. -----(update2) USB3 boot problem is Ubuntu related. MoBo probably shouldn't be blamed.

---- (update) New finding: When booting using a USB flash card reader + 4GB SD card from USB3 port, it will end up with some read errors and fail. Same device works fine in USB2 ports.

2. The ethernet interface drops loads of packages in ubuntu. This manifests only after I boot into windows. But I don't think this a ubuntu problem because in windows if I run the Realteck diagnosis tool, it show IRQ conflict and FIFO problems. ----- (update) this seems to be windows driver puting the card in a weird. state. Though still don't knwo why Realtek diagnosis tool fails. -- (update2) Installed latest drivers and tool from realtek website. The Diagnostics tool now reports no problem.

Only a BIOS load default or a cold boot would fix this. And it will happen again if boot into windows. ----- (update) a cold boot reset the card state this is why.

Strangely If I disable the LAN from BIOS, it also disables the USB3 port ???!!!

I have Intel RapidStorage installed. It looks suspicious to me. A couple of times RapidStorage says I have new hardware installed and asks me to reboot. I really don't have anything new. (update)------ uninstalled, no difference. probably red herring.

Once, I see there is a BD-drive in Windows but I don't have any optical drives in the box. ------------- (update) false alarm - this is actually my DaemonTools' virtual drive.

Any insight?

Update your BIOS to the latest version if not already done so.

Have you installed all the drivers for the USB3 ports?
How long is the cable of your USB device?

Ethernet - again do you have the latest drivers for both uBuntu and Win7? How long is your cable between PC and router?

Why does Intel RapidStorage look suspicious to you?

1. The only newer BIOS version is F6E which is beta so I didn't just upgrade right away.

2. Driver for windows yes. cabel is about 0.5m long. definitely less 1m.

3. For windows yes, ubuntu should be fine as it's all included in the kernel. I can try latest ubuntu to see what happens. cabel is about 1m. No way it's a cable problem. already tried differet cables.

4. A couple of times RapidStorage says I have new hardware installed and asks me to reboot. I really don't have anything new.

I just remembered, once, I see there is a BD-drive in Windows but I don't have any optical drives in the box.

Cool thanks.

My first reaction is that you have a messed up OS install. And it sounds very similar to what my neighbour had when she had dual boot set up. I have just installed a Win7 OS on the same board and was not able to connect to the router until I had installed the drivers for the lan.

I plugged my USB3 into the correct port after install all the the latest drivers directly from the Intel site and all is good so far. May I suggest that you download the latest drivers from the INTEL site. Once that has been done let me know if there is any improvement. You really should not be getting phantom hardware that is a worry.

All the drivers are from Gigabyte's website. They should be fine.... otherwise everyone using this board will see thie problems. Also driver issues can't explain the problems in ubuntu.

btw smart computer guy + female neighbour having computer problem  :D

LOL the female neighbour is a mate of my wife, and my wife knows more about PC's than 99.99% or all the folk here on the forum. 1Day - check out some of her posts you will understand.

Intel is the more up-to-date source for drivers. And not all users will be using the exact same combination of hardware that you are using. Router, USB3 hard drive, notebook hard drive - just to list a few plus the big one, running dual OS. Just so many things outside of the normal everyday users. If you get my drift.

Anyhow give it a try and see what do you have to loose?

And once all that fails you might just have to go the RMA route, Hope not but...

Thanks ! I'll try more.

Hmm odd, sounds like it could be PSU related, do you have another you coudl try. What PSU do you have runnig this?

PSU is the one come with the case - Silverstone SUGO SG05B 450W edition.

450W should be more than enough for Core i3 2120+GTX550Ti+4G + 2.5' laptop HD.

The external 2T USB3 HD is self powered (ie has its own power brick)

I have been stress testing the system. Games/GPU benchmarks. no problems so far.

1) If I remember correctly since BIOSes can't load any forms of drivers, plugging the drive into a USB 3 port won't work and will cause problems. It's best to leave it plugged into a USB 2 port.

2) From the sound of things it sounds like a dodgy Windows install. Maybe try repair it or reinstall it? Try a fresh install of Windows/Ubuntu on a seperate drive and see if that solves anything. If not then perhaps it could be a motherboard problem.

Can't have a USB3 HD booting up? This sounds counter common sense.

I will try, but still I can't believe it.

When there is problem relate to the USBs, I always start with the search for the latest mobo chipset driver.
When installing the mobo chipset driver, we must reboot the PC for the new chipset driver to take effect.

Bios update may help as well.

Hope this suggestion helps!

I think I'm getting somewhere

1. USB problem seems to be relates to NEC/Renesas USB3 controller. People say a firmware update would fix some problem. I'm going to give a try tonight.

More Details:
http://forum.giga-byte.co.uk/index.php/topic,2903.0.html

2. Ethernet dropping package problem seems to be windows puting the card in a weird state and hence causing problem in Linux. People say disable wake-on-lan would help.

For more details google "8111 dual boot"

Outstanding problem
1. Realtek's diagnostic tool reports IRQ Conflicts in Windows. I understand it may cause problem in ubuntu be why still has problem in windows?

Can everyone please help with running the diagnosis?

2. When booting using a USB flash card reader + 4GB SD card from USB3 port, it will end up with some read errors and fail. Same device works fine in USB2 ports.
