First impressions are certainly good! Upon unboxing the monitor it is clear that true to form, DELL have produced another high quality and beautifully finished product.

The U2412M is slightly easier on the eyes than the U2410 with curved corners and base finished in a subtle matt black. The stand is able to height adjust, twist and rotate just as the U2410 does and suits the monitor superbly.

Looking at an "out of the box experience" and hooking the monitor up was straight forward as it expected with a monitor, the ports on the rear are easily accessable and well thought out. My only gripe I could see was the inclusion of a display port aimed more at professionals with apple MACs etc rather than an HDMI which could put you off purchasing if you wish to run a Ps3 or 360 through it. There is however a VGA port so 1080P console gaming isnt completely ruled out if you have the adaptor cables required.

The U2412M is LED back lit unlike the more expensive U2410 which uses more natural cathodes. Not only is this a little bit of a let down but the fact the panel is only E-IPS rather than S-IPS of the U2410 also could be seen as a negatve. As a result the colours are a little on the cold side and the palet isnt as robust as that of the U2410. HOWEVER dont let this put you off!! With a few adjusments to the back light, the contrast and saturation etc on both the panel and in the VGA control centre soon sorted this leaving very little difference between the two. The U2412M still lacks that warmth that is produced by the U2410 but for a saving of over £160inc VAT it is certainly worth the compromise.

Final thoughts...

This monitor betters the U2311H in every way offering 1920x1200 pixels rather than just 1920x1080 which feels much better to look at as a result. Its not quite on par with the U2410 but as it is over a third cheaper you really cannot grumble.

Is there anything else at around the £300 mark worth looking at? Not really no... 3D monitors just dont cut it for image/video editing work and unless you insist on playing games in 3D there really is no other alternative for value for money making the U2412M an absolute bargain!

:)

Hi there

Can't agree more, for the money this is incredible value and kudos to DELL for making it happen. :)

Thanks for that. I am glad that some companies are still producing 16:10 monitors.

I was wondering if anyone knew what the Sync Polarity on this monitor is? Reason is, I was thinking of getting 2 to run Nvidia Surround with my HP LP2475W, so I was hoping there is no compatability issues since the Dell does look like good value for money.

Thanks.

I shall have a look into this for you as I am tempted to sell my dell 30" for 3 of these :)

Personally, I prefer 16:9 now. I got used to it, and it works with everything. Don't miss the vertical space too much.

Still looks like a pretty good monitor, It just sucks it'll have the traditional LG failcoating.

would a HDMI -> DVI Adapter work with this for e.g. a popcorn hour or PS3 ?

I'd say yes, as the monitor has DVI-D with HDCP. However I can't say I'd recommend it, consoles and TV content are always better viewed on a TV than a monitor in my experience. Although if it is your only option (space contraints etc) then you should be fine.

Yeah. I guess it would need to do 1:1 mapping so 1080 content would have black bars as I wouldn't want it stretched, be good if we could find out if 1:1 is there or selectable.

A few more

Assassins Creed (All games in the series)
Alice: Madness returns
Bastion
Bulletstorm
Dragon Age 2
Dungen Siege 3
Mirrors Edge
Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena
Splinter Cell: Conviction
Warhammer: Space Marine
Witcher 2 (patched with crappy HOR+ 16:10 support after many months)

As you can see most of those games are from 2011 so it is pretty obvious that the game industry starts to abondon 16:10 totally.
I just loaded Mirrors edge and have to agree it does have black bars..

Is there any FPS or racing games you know of ??.
Bet you'd even stretch 4:3 TV broadcasts to fill the widescreen, to avoid those "awful" black bars
It funny .....I have a 16:9 ratio 50" plasma and i still have black bars on most movies

What you don't get Trana is that PC's are used for more than playing games and watching movies.

When using a PC for more "serious" work the higher vertical resolution of 16:10 is very useful.

It's horses for courses and each to their own.

There's a *langauge* over at Hardforum who goes by the name of Oled, he spouts the same old "16:9 is always better" carp over and over, or at least he did until most of the other members wised up and placed him on their ignore list. This guy's posting style is suspiciously similar.

It's a pity OcUK doesn't have an ignore function (does it?), in the meantime I can only suggest not feeding the troll. :)

That is because Oled = Trana. I am going to remain impartial on this one but I can see the point Trana is trying to make but I disapprove of the way he is making it. Having just tested and reviewed the U2412M with a number of movies and games (including Dirt 3 which was on his 'hitlist', Bad Company 2, Arma 2 and C&C 4) I can say I only noticed the different aspect ratio on the latter title. This is because there seemed to be noticeably more vertical space - now I know that not all games work like this but I can't say I found the 16:10 resolution bothersome at all. It certainly makes a positive difference on the desktop.

Anyway I don't really think this is even a debate worth having (again). The U2412M is a very nice monitor for gaming and everything else. People are allowed to prefer 16:9 for various reasons and likewise people are allowed to prefer 16:10. Nobody is right, nobody is wrong. The real winners don't care what other people think. They just enjoy their monitor. ;)

What a *langauge*. Who cares about black bars? Are you also the kind of guy that complains about black bars when watching a 2.35:1 movie on a 16:9 TV ?

Sure, if you primary purpose is games / movies then yeah 16:9. If you also do other things then 16:10 all the way. I'd love a 4:3 screen as wide as a 24/27 inch 16:9/16:10 but I doubt that'll happen soon.

Well, yes, everyone is entitled to their opinion, but it's a shame when threads which could otherwise be useful and informative get cluttered up, derailed and effectively destroyed due to endless garbage posts by some monomaniac, and the responses they inevitably provoke. We've seen enough of it at [H] without having to put up with it here as well.

@Surveyor and chapparal, thanks guys, although with a bit of luck the individual concerned will just go away. :)

edit: looks like the situation has been resolved, apologies for the intermission. As you were, gentlemen...

Yeah I know. It starts off as a little flame and then before you know it it's a full blown inferno. Can't just sit back and let the thread get incinerated like that.
