I'm going to be having a look at a car this week. On paper it looks perfect for me, what I've been looking for with the spec I want, and the price seems good.

I've not had an expirence with BMW dealers, will they negotiate on price? I'm happy to pay the asking if everything is ok with the car. But it'll be nice to get abit more off.

Can I be quite demanding, ie if I spot some worn dash board trim for example or the wheels have curb marks is it worth asking for it to be sorted.

You will always get something off, but how much really depends on the individual sale.

And yes, you can point out and demand what you like.

You can always ask for anything with dealers.

Whether they will give it or not is another matter :)

Usually the maximum level of discount is to be achieved by him talking to his boss. If he says he can't give what you want, tell him to ask his boss if he can do it and you'll sign today.

Usually, he'll have a set amount of discount he himself can give. Get this, then keep pushing to the point he says he can't go any further. Then tell him to ask his boss.

That worked with me when i bought from VXL :)

Whether you then turn round at this point and cheekily ask for something extra (like half a tank of fuel or whatever) is entirely optional :D

And don't be afriad to walk away either. Leave your details and he may just end up ringing you back if he gets desperate.

Paint and upholstery protection sir?

Gap insurance Sir?

They WILL be asked, the first is not needed as can be done for a fraction of the price yourself The second can be got much cheaper from elsewhere if you want it.

Thanks guys. I'll see what I can do on the price. If I get get 5% off the asking price I'd be happy.

Its a used car. I'll take out GAP insurance from Ala I think. Paint protection?? I'll just use Collinite wax I think.

You should be able to get some sort of discount I think it really depends on what margin they have to play with on the specific car. The first one I went to see with they were more willing to negotiate (they went on to drop the sticker price by £3,000 anyway), but the second BMW I went to see at a different dealership took some hassle to get them down by £1,000.

Didn't get anything off our used Mini last month.

Was told they won't even make £400 profit on the sale and wouldn't budge at all.

Did not fancy telling my wife she couldn't have the car so we didn't walk away!

My sister did this when we went to get her Yaris years ago.

"Let me do the talking and say nowt!"

She sees it. "I love it I have to have it"

Dealer :D

Me

The only thing main dealer sales departments are good for - selling.

I got £900 off of the Swift, But to be honest they just had it over priced by a good £500 anyway. Wasn't hard to get them down to a price I was willing to pay.

You will be able to negotiate and should get the car for what it's actually worth and not what BMW have it up for. Just go in there with the fixed amount you want to pay, when the negotiations start tell them a bit lower than your max limit - they'll refuse, they'll get the manager guy out whose normally a jerk, they'll give you every story about how they won't make anything on it... but if you stick to your limit then at least you won't pay more than you want.

Always remember you can add wheel refurbs and longer warranties into the negotiations to get get yourself a good deal. Just have a walk away figure they will most likely call you back with a half way point - I waked away, they called me the next day and I ended up with 4k off the sticker.

Thanks. On paper the spec looks so good its unlikely I'll be able to bring myself to walking away. I've been looking at z4's for about a year and about once every 4 months one comes up with all the toys I want on it, in the colour I want without some stupid blue seats or wood effect dashboard, for the right price. The sticker price is £1000 under my budget already so thats all good.

The price seems good already ones with this spec are normally over £16000.

Don't show that you MUST have that car, or else they're going to be less likely to budge as they'll know you're probably going to crumble and give in.

Thanks I'm aware of this. I'm happy to walk away if its generally tatty, or something doesn't feel right.

So you obviously know what is a good price to pay and you also know what you would like to pay, so maybe have a higher limit than usual so you get the car you'll be happy with for the sake of a couple hundred.

Good luck :)
