I know this sounds silly but anyone else kinda in the same boat?

David Attenborough is just THE **Grand Master** of nature show narration.

Similar shows narrated by others just dont do it for me - except for one or two of them. (One of them is an up & coming naturalist who the Master himself has said is very good at narration..I forgot her name).

I know we should give the next gen a chance to shine and Im sure someone brilliant will come along but man...how do you top the mighty DA lol.

I try...oh yea do I try ...but can't seem to handle it. And the worst offenders are the American documentaries (Animal Planet) ...they all sound like they are doing car commercials.

David Attenbourough could narrate about ants playing Minesweeper on an old laptop inside their anthill and I will watch all 500 hours of it.

No doubt..when it comes to docus...UK is top dog :D

There is no doubt that David Attenborough is the best but I can still watch documentaries without him. Well, not those horrendous Amreican documentaries that seem like more recap than documentary. They begin with, in today's show you are going to see these [insert appropriate superlative here]... After that there's the recap before the break of what we've just seen followed by an ad break then another bloody recap in case we've forgotten already what happened in the one minute of actual showtime as a result of all the shiney things in the ads.

My bro-in-law worked with the man on the recent 'First Life' documentary (I think it was that one), travelling with him to Alaska and so on. He got to know him quite well and said that he is an amazing man. DA asked him all about his family, his life and so on - he was really interested. A true legend!

Stephen Fry is apparently getting involved.

That'll do me :)

He's not DA but he's cool.

There's a documentary series starting on the BBC with him narrating at the moment, I'm impressed with it! He's got that same likable character about his voice as DA.

Not sure if it's because we've all been brought up listening to him or because he's just so good at letting the subject be the star and not over egging the pud, but there's no doubt DA is the absolute Daddy.

I don't mind other people having a bash, but it's just not the same is it.

DA does extremely well, as his voice is very neutral, there's almost no accent to speak of, and his tone is very flat.

Fry does relatively well, but his voice, like his personality, has highs and lows, which can be offputting to some.

And as for the hamster, well, he's just too much like a labrador, overly excitable, and constantly trying to hump your leg.

The only other narrator I like besides David Attenborough is John Hurt. These men have such calming voices that so far no one else can get close too. I wish Hurt would do more nature related documentaries though, as the only one I've seen so far was Human Planet.

I'm in complete agreement with you. To the point i hope they release his back cataloge of shows on BD

Perhaps then, they could afford to keep the F1 going.

I learnt most of what I know about nature form Sir Attenborough, the best narrator by a country mile.

I agree.

DA is the daddy and whilst I can watch stuff without him I sit there watching it thinking "this would be so much better if DA was narrating.

John Hurt's narration in Human Planet was excellent... although I did think of the dragon from Merlin a few times.

Every TV program that isn't an actual drama is like that now, I just can't watch a lot of TV as it just annoys me hearing the same thing 5 times in a 30min show. That and so many hour long documentaries only have 10 minutes of actual content padded out to fill the time.
