Am I missing something or do i not have a means to do my standard fresh install gubbins on this shiny new MBA?

There isn't a stick like I got with the previous air?

I suppose I could buy it then do that thing where you extract the image from the package, but I shouldn't really have to buy it tbh...

hmmmmmm - where's that image sitting then? i've got bugger all space as it is :(

It's a hidden partition but from what I've read, it's only around 600Mb so it's not taking up too much space.

oh ok, so am i right in thinking that macs that come from the factory with lion have this recovery partition, but all other ones you need to get it from the app store and whack it on a usb stick for fresh install is that right?

yea the new macs have the recovery partition and also the ability to download lion over the air from the boot screen

you don't need to put it on a usb disc but yes if your new mac comes with snow leopard you need to claim and download lion

Righto, from what i can see my new macbook air doesn't have a separate hidden partition, it seems to be downloading the whole installation and taking its time over it... surely this wouldn't be necessary if a full install image was inbuilt...

Could it be the case that the new airs can only install straight from the internet?

There seems to be some truth to that... I've read a few times that you can't install from a thumb drive on the new airs and minis...

All seems a bit strange to me... Means with my crappy internet I can't fresh install in under about 3 hours :(

Yes it can now be installed from a thumb drive on the new airs along as you have the right build, - click link -

Why would you want/need to do a fresh install on a new machine??

Normally as a whole heap of stuff was installed along with the OS that wasn't needed. (Languages, printer drivers etc.) With Lion though that isn't the case, as you cannot customize the install like before. So its a bit pointless. :)

Well, kinda. It would make perfect sense with a Windows PC, as they come with all kinds of crapware, but it's nothing like that when you buy a Mac.

I have no logical explanation for you I'm afraid... just like to fresh format new machines :)

Guys, I understand! but... I guess its some form of OCD, I like to start fresh with a clean install that I've done.

I am well aware that it doesn't make sense... but I bet I'm not the only one ;)
