I don't normally post RSS feed type threads but this is staggering...

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-14649083

"Documents from NI's education and library boards show that in one case a six-year-old boy received £70,000 after a door was closed on his thumb. In another incident a 14-year-old was paid £62,500 when he was hurt while climbing to retrieve a football."

Seriously, what is wrong with this place? What scumbag parent would actually sue for their kid getting their thumb hurt? This is just disgusting. £70,000 for something that happens to most kids at some stage.

I don't know what else to say really - this is just unreal the figures quoted here really.

As with most RSS type threads, there's not enough detail in the link to comment properly.

When the boy's thumb was shut in the door, what was the extent of his injuries? Was there any negligence that led to the event happening? I find it hard to believe that £70k would be paid out for absolutely no reason.

That's not to say that I don't think there's plenty of examples where people push their luck, or make false claims.

I just don't think the article does anything other than throw a few headline figures around.

Couldn't agree more with you, I cut my head open on the corner of a wall in primary school on these concrete flower bed things on the path up to the play ground. They have levelled them now but that was probably to stop the same thing happening again and someone actually suing. My scar is awesome anyway.

Too little info, the young lad getting hurt climbing to retrieve a ball. Did he scratch his knee or did he break a couple of legs?

Yea, one side of the story really... For all we know, that kid now has one less finger, or the girl broke both her legs very badly...

I slipped on a wet floor when at Primary School which caused me to suffer a 4" split in the skin at the back of my skull and the obligatory concussion which necessitated three days in hospital.

I was given into trouble for running by the Head when I got back and that was that. We really need to ditch this nonsense and adopt a more sensible 70's style approach.

I ran through (kind of) one of our schools full sized security glass doors (the ones with the metal wire grid inbedded in it) while being chased by the school bully. I took the door off it's bottom hinge, smashed my face, cut my knee to ribbons (lots of square flaps of skin) etc and I also got in trouble for running in school, plus an angry Mum about my wrecked trousers/bloody shirt. How times change!

Why should what damage was sustained falling from a tree matter? The child climbed it, the child slipped. Unless a teacher dragged him out with a boat hook, there should be zero liability.

Certainly, it was a pain and it took 1-2 weeks to clear when I once trapped a finger while in a hotel, but the staff were great with the TLC, bandaging etc. (was only a teenager at the time). So TLC / staff on duty, yes, but £62k? That's 6 years of my take-home salary after tax. 6 years of honest work. Some of that money could have gone to us poorer folks!

Ooh, my subject but I can't reply because somebody will accuse me of talking about my job.

as much as i think this country is going a little h&s mad, in this instance, for all we know, the lad who had his thumb shut in a door could have suffered injuries that will affect his dexterity for the rest of his life. take that into account and £70k isn't that much.
