**** Original Starcraft 2 Thread ****

That was more a (bad) example of how I'd build the wrong units not a specific example.

I'm pretty good at using my early lings to scout around and always leave one at their natural. But once they have a wall with a cannon or 2 and some stalkers at the top of the ramp you don't exactly see much.

I'll try sacrificing an overlord at 7 mins for a few games to see if I can get a feel for the various builds.

Do you tend to always keep plenty spare overlords for this? I probably need to overbuild them a bit and sac them more often just to learn.

6 wins, 2 losses tonight. Very happy :)

And my 1000th post yay!

Grats on both xD.
Does anybody like 2v2? I play sc2 quite a bit and I'm only silver 1v1 but it really annoys me and I get cheesed a lot :P I'm good and play terran/zerg. High plat 2v2/3v3 aswell :P

I was doing some 2v2 tonight as random, playing terran and doing blue flame drops felt so god damn ****ing good. Makes me wanna play terran just for the ability to do drops, it is so much fun.
Nearly as good as burrowed banelings as u watch your enemy get closer.

HuK getting to Ro8 and Nestea out in GSL ;D
Gunna miss saturday of MLG this weekend though, sucks.

Sucks. MLG will be amazing, and I'm really into infestor drops lately spamming infested terran. It's sooo good :D Try it if you play zerg.
Also if you play protoss get 4 sentrys and a warp prism and drop sentrys into the mineral line and forcefield there probes in so they cant run and the enemys units cant kill you because there out of range. It's so good :P

been doing 2v2's today only got the game a few days ago! I have aloooot to learn lol friend and I only won 1 game out of 4 really enjoying it but big learning curve! looking forward to MLG to get some tips :D

I've added him in SC2, never online.. I've pretty much been online 12 hours a day the last 7 days.. He can have win anyway, think I'm going to take a break from Starcraft 2 for Dota 2. :3

you are supposed to actually organise a time to match, not just hope someone shows up lol and according to your sc2 history I have a very hard time believing you '12 hours a day' story so please spare me the bull.
anyway removed you now.

Seriously guys, can we not just all get along? If Astaeri doesn't want to carry on with the tournament then it's no biggy.

I never sacrifice more than one overlord really. Maybe if there is an unusual quiet period in a game where they might be doing something a bit strange I'll throw in another one, but that's extremely rare.

With scouting, you have to really consider what options a protoss has. Like all the races, they can't do everything at once, so certainly at the 7 minute mark they are either doing one thing, or many things badly.

Say you're at around the 5-6 minute mark and they have a complete wall. Your ling at the bottom of the ramp sees that there is no expansion. Really, there are only a few good options a protoss can take:

a) 4gate
b) DT rush
c) Air rush
d) Expand

So move your ling up the ramp slightly, what do you see? If you see a large number of sentries, straight away you can throw out air and DTs. A protoss can't afford the gas off one base to have a large number of sentries and other gas heavy units. More importantly, be suspicious of what he's doing with the minerals. It's highly likely that the protoss will be using the minerals to expand soon.

What if there are no sentries? Well where is the gas going? Suspect air or DTs and react accordingly.

It could be that if you spot say, no sentries and in fact they are just rubbish. They could not be going air/DTs and instead have 500 gas in the bank. Fantastic, this guarantees you the win :p. So what if you spent a drone on a wasted spore crawler or 2 and a few extra queens? This is negated by the fact that you can produce 20+ extra drones whilst they're screwing up their macro and win later on in the game :).

I'm one of the P's who always panics and throws out DTs if I'm doing badly. Though that said, I usually have overseers in their base, and if I see they have no detection at all then I usually transition into DTs, fill up a warp prism with them, send it over then deploy it and warp in a few more before charging in. It does sometimes feel a little cheap, but then again if they've given me time to tech up to DTs and not scouted it (Plus the shrine takes a year to build) so I don't feel so bad about it.

When playing I've always wanted to avoid 'cheese'. I'm not entirely sure how to 4gate, but I've never cannon rushed or anything like that. The only thing I occasionally do is stick down a pylon if I see a zerg trying to fast expand, block off the hatch for a few seconds. Probably doesn't benefit too much in the long run, but hopefully puts him off, similar to a gas steal.

Anyone got any good scouting tips?

I'm getting to grips with zerg, I can hold off early cheeses ok and long 30-40+ minute games generally favor zerg anyway.

But I'm finding most of my losses come at around the 15-20 minute mark where my opponent arrives with either a totally massive army compared to mine or they appear with like 10 void rays when I've got lings and roaches.

I know my failures are usually scouting related but it seems really difficult as zerg vs walled of bases with cannons/turrets/bunkers

You should really have more than lings and roaches by 15 mins in, ie Infestors, Corruptors and if you like them Hydras.

Yea like i said before, that was a bad example. It's more that I lose to some hard counter when i thought i'd built the right unit.

It just seems both terran and protoss can deny my scouting quite easily later on in the game but have both cloaky and flying things that can scout zerg without much problem.

Grass is always green and all that i suppose though.

It's never a bad idea to stick a spore crawler down at your bases, it would solve both the cloaked and air unit scouts, and and overlord/overseer or two with the speed updgrade make ideal scouts.

Also depends on your build, mutas are good for scouting and they serve a double purpose, once they see you've got mutas they'll be less happy to leave their base, they may even spend a fortune on air defenses which they won't need because your only scouting with them.

I keep debating playing SC2 I have a few concerns,
I reached gold or plat solo on my own and in my opinion that was just down to MMM balls no skill.
I let a friend play my account who was one of the best WC2 players and he got me diamond, I never felt I was good at SC2 and I would like to play it again however am I still going to be in diamond because I'm going to get smashed?

I always wanted to play Protos but stuck with Terran as you learn them in the campaign can anyone give me some basic tips? Are they a lot harder than Terran?

The season reset a few weeks ago so you have to play placement matches and your get put into the correct league for you :)

It's been far easier to get to Diamond than it was even a few months ago.
If you want to train into a new civ, start playing unranked games.
