Well yeah, getting an entire range of phones banned because they use thumbnails to deal with digital photo handling is kinda OTT.

How Apple got a patent on something that has been used for years is a joke.

These patent wars harm only consumer choice.

Probably because it would be likely to be a lejitimate beef not some Apple execs getting precious over swipe to unlock and thumbnails to handle digital photos.

I hope Samsung stitch Apple up bigtime.

If I was Samsung now I would be shipping my handsests OS free and with a download link to download "open source" software that only works on their devices.

Exactly, I mean, use of an Envelope to depict Email.. wtf? What email client or icon hasn't used an envelope?

4 icons on screen... because that is an optimal size for a smartphone, nothing more..

I'd be very surprised if it has anything to do with this. I'm not sure why people think Apple are on the brink of collapse, is there anything to back it up? (budget Android phones collectively outselling the iPhone doesn't count) :p

Or were you joking? :D

Not joking no, a few things recently tell me things aren't all hunky dory in Cupertino. Ask yourself why he didn't wait to announce his resignation either during or just after the imminent new iPhone launch. :)

I hope it's not health related by the way, that would throw all of my observations out of the window and obviously be terrible.

As others have said, theres not really many different ways you can design a touchscreen smartphone, and also this wasnt the reason why Apple won, rather that Samsung use a similar photo browsing method?
 
I have an old O2 XDA II in the loft I found today, it doesn't really look much different to a modern smartphone apart from obviously screen technology has got better, including less reliance on physical buttons and resistive screens.

Bearing in mind I had that phone a few years before the iPhone came out.
