I've got a 45,000 document with loads of tables and graphs, but its in PDF and the laptop the word document was contained on has been run over.

Need a good converter to salvage something

All the models have to be recomputed though if we want to change the graphs :(

There's a few free tools online that will do this (google time!) but they're all pretty rubbish to be honest, I doubt it'll come out well.

There are a few tools out there, nuance pdf converter professional will convert pdf documents to word with some success but from experience when working with large documents the formatting falls to pieces and tables/graphs all need reworking.

If it was me I would put the laptop hard disk in a caddy and see if you can spring it into life long enough to get the files off. It can be a more expensive route but will save a hell of a lot of time and hassle if you can recover what you need.

We recently had one of our machines run over by a 2 ton Volvo and pretty much the only damage was the screen and chassis, all the internals survived including the hard disk.

edit: if you want me to run the convert for you i have the software here and would happily email the doc back... email in trust

My boss asked me this question only a couple of weeks ago :-) So I did teh Google and used an online one as already suggested by folks here. The one I found does ask for your email, so that it can email the converted docs, but I can confirm that you don't get any unsolicited spam as a result.

i've used Nitro PDF to sucessfully convert from PDF to word before.

If i remember correctly you can get a fully functional trial, so don't even need to buy it. Was far better than the online converters.

the laptop got run over, but did the hard drive get destroyed? those things are usually pretty durable!

When I boot up the laptop with another screen it gives some checksum error. No code or bluescreen, just a sentence about checksum, cant remember the exact thing. Is the HDD dead?

In Adobe reader, if you click file export or something I am sure you can click change to word document. Pretty sure I have done this before.

no, but it's damaged.
get it to someone with a bit of data recovery equipment and theres a very good chance they'll be able to recovery the file.

Stop turning it on, it might cause further damage.

Youll still have to recompute the graphs- no pdf to doc will redo the actuall mechanics of the document as the pdf is just a static rendering of the doc.
