I have the above cpu and an Asus M4A77TD Pro mobo. I have used a built in overclock facility and have gained the following results, the stock speed of the cpu is 3.4GHZ:-

Core speed - 3749.5MHz
Multiplier - x17
Bus Speed - 220.5MHz
HT Link - 2205.6MHz
Core Voltage - 1.424 to 1.440 V

Just wondering if anyone knows if this cpu can be overclocked any further. The reason I want to over clock is to run MS Flight Sim X at much higher settings.

Is that your idle temperature? If so, that's very high. Idle should be somewhere around 30 ideally.

Upgrading your GPU would be best for running games at higher settings, though a CPU jump can help.

I've always had better results leaving the FSB at 200 and upping the Multipliers.

71C is WAY too high, 62C should be the max, but when overclocked most people stick to about 55C. This is load temp, idle is kinda irrelevent tbh. :p

what are you using to monitor the temperatures? it shouldnt be possible for that chip to get to 71C because at ~65C it will throttle back to avoid overheating

Dunno about that! Ive seen my old 955 C2 hit 88+ and not throttle back. Even my current C3 hits 66+ on an H80 and keeps going... but it is getting warmer over here.

My idle is about 45 - 48, I am using core temp to monitor the cpu temperature. I was using an overclocking facility within the BIOS to do this. You could over clock at 1%, 5%, 8% and 10% and I choose 10% but it altered all settinga automatically.

JUst and update idling at about 37, when I started up FSX it jumped to about 60. When I posted the 71 reading in my first post this was after running Prime95 which was working all four cores at 100%. Would I be better doing a manual over clock just by increasing the multiplier and not increasing the FSB speed.

My cooler has the brand name of OCZ on it. The only similar I can see on the site is an Artic Cooling Freezer, it has 6 heat pipes (copper) which are connected to 42 stacked fins with a 92mm fan attached. I also have an 80mm fan attached to the rear of my case. At present as I am posting my cpu is between 43 and 44. Hope this helps.

Try reducing the voltage a until it fails prime, then raise it above the failure threshold. I run an x4 at 4GHz with 1.375V, passed 50 runs of linX and 16 hours of prime 95 blend. Chips do vary but if you bought it recently it should definitely be able to do better.

I have the same chip and had some issues recently myself, PC was crashing and with a quick check in the BIOS the CPU temp was showing at 77c.

Quick removal, clean, new TIM and its now down to a balmy 55c under load :)

So it might be worth removing the cooler and doing what i did.

I tried doing a manual overclock last night by adjusting both the multiplier and the FSB. Booted up ok but when I tried running prime95 it blue screened, I tried incresing the voltage each time but still had the same result. When I used the auto overclocking as described in my first post my machine did not crash under Prime95 although it was still running at around 70. When I was doing the manual overclock, the voltage values turned to yellow when I got above a certain value, is there any significance to this. I have been unable to get my cpu to run at 4GHZ with the volkage at 1.357 as stated by someone else earlier. Should I overclock manually by adjusting the multiplier and the voltage and leave the FSB at 200.

hi, If you increase the NB / HT link speed this will cause bluescreen. CPU memory controller and NB could do with some extra power too.

NB V +
CPU NB VID + ( extra cpu heat )

seems to be the only reason mine bluescreens if one of those values is low. My 955 is running 3.8Ghz with 1.475v 55c on prime95; CPU NB VID 1.175v and NB 1.180v with HT @2.4Ghz. The values I give are still under testing but mine holds prime95 for an hour + fine atm and I'm still messing around with it so likely to change if I try for 3.9 or 4ghz.
