Which tablet? Samsung or Asus?

Right, I *think* I'm in the market for a new tablet :p

Not sure whether to get a 10.1" or 7". The former would give me a netbook type thing, the latter would give me a portable media player.I'd mainly use it for internet, music, videos, the odd game etc, maybe a bit of document viewing. I'm definitely going to have to install a custom rom as well!

I've narrowed it down to 2 tablets, the Asus EEE and the Samsung galaxy tab (the 7" one)

Getting it from USA so prices are £240 for the Asus and £210 for the Sammy. An extra £75 for the keyboard dock for the Asus.

The Asus is ridiculously good value for money, but not portable, however the Samsung is £30 cheaper and portable, but not as good a piece of kit.

Help me decide? Cheers :)

Asus. More versatile, and an extra 3" hardly makes it not portable. And remember the dock doubles the battery life which you'll need for watching videos etc on.

The USA prices are great. Pick me one up as well? :p

Without checking the prices myself, make sure you take import taxes into account, as they may end up making the price difference between buying from the US and buying in the UK negligible.

A friend is going over there, buying one there and bringing it back ;)

The size does make a difference to me (:o) The Asus would replace my netbook, the samsung would replace my dead ipod.

7"? How about a BlackBerry PlayBook? *hides*

Personally I'd go with the ASUS if I needed the benefits of the dock, e.g. increased battery life, arguably more comfortable typing experience and better performance.

I think the original Galaxy Tab is getting on a bit now, not really sure what it is like to use. So if you are considering a 7" for the increased portability then the PlayBook might actually be in contention as well, should be getting the Android player at some point as well so you can run Android applications on it.

Another vote for the transformer + dock here.

Also worth remembering that the dock will be the same for the next version of the transformer, so you won't have to buy another one to upgrade

What netbook do you have to replace, transformer screen is better than most netbooks.

I've been using my mum's netbook and she's starting annoyed by this, so I need to get my own. But I also wanted an ipod replacement, hence the toss up between sizes.

I agree that the asus has a great screen. Looks like it's the preferred choice, I'm not sure if I'll get the dock with it too though, £315 is a lot of money!

If you're wanting a netbook replacement, then depending on what you're intending do it might be sensible to buy the dock

The extra battery provided by the dock may come in useful to me, but the keyboard would just be an added luxury. I won't be doing any extensive typing on the thing, probably the most intensive stuff would be editing documents or posting on OcUK and I reckon that the touch screen keyboard would be fine for these.

Out of interest what phone do you have?

If you need something to replace an ipod could you not get the asus and load your phone up with music?

I have the Desire HD. I do have music on there, but videos would be a lot better on a tablet screen.

Also out of interest, can I tether my phone to either tablet to get my phone internet on the tablet?

Even better; the Desire HD can be a Wi-Fi Hotspot. Drag the status bar down, go to Quick Settings and you can turn it on from there/set up passwords and change the SSID etc.

+1 Transformer - very happy user here :)
Dock is a bonus - I tend to use it sparingly, but is very handy for more involved typing, 'propping up' the tablet for my little ones to watch a movie when on holiday, 2x USB port and regular SD card slot....not to mention massive battery boost/charging of tablet feature....

Transformer over the Galaxy 7" by miles, but shame you missed out on the Touchpad!

How much is the Samsung 10.1 in the US? If it's a similar price then that's what I would go for.

I personally think that the transformer is better than the galaxy tab, and the galaxy tab is £310 for the 16gb version. Cheaper than here, but I can get the Asus and dock for that price.
