Upgrade to a 6 series ati or go for the big upgrade -

Have to say, my e8400 and 4890 have done me very well, but I feel this current system will struggle to cope with the slew of games coming out over the next several months, starting with DE3HR which is released tomorrow.

So, is it worth upgrading to a 6 series ATI as a stop gap for 6/9 months or just go for a full system upgrade (would upgrading the gpu give me any significant benefit or does the dual core limitation make it all moot/pointless effort)?

As much as I adore my wolfdale (will these things ever depreciate?!) I have a feeling I'm going to start feeling left behind when the likes of BF3 etc are released.

Cheers, Paul.

I hear you. I tend to wait and wait and wait and . . .

To be fair, this system hasn't particularly struggled with anything I've thrown at it with the exception of Metro 2033 where I had to jog the resolution down a tad (sub 1080p). However I only want to play games when I can experience them at their best (i.e. maxed out) otherwise I tend to feel I'm losing out on the overall package.

Anyway, you're quite correct. I shall see how DE3HR plays tomorrow, which looks like it's one of the lesser demanding games coming out.

I just wondered if anyone else had got much of an improvement when upping their gpu (from a 4 series) with a similar cpu.

Cheers, Paul.

If you must max out Metro 2033 at 40+ fps then you'll need at least 1x 6990 or 2x 6950 2GB, along with a decent CPU at 4GHz+.

I would get the i5 2500K + 2x 6950 2GB.

Heh, oh no. I enjoyed Metro 2033 just fine at 1680x1050.

I reckon BF3 will be the trigger point for an i5 2500k (if something else isn't churned out by intel before Nov).

And gosh, I've never had a sli/crossfire set-up ever! Always a first I guess.

is a corsair 650w psu enough for 6950 in cf with overclocked i5 and 4 hdd?

It may be, it may not be.

People often over estimate their PSU requirements, but then again, CF plus 4 HDDs might be pushing it quite a lot.

According to that Anandtech chart it should be fine. Hard drives don't use tremendous amounts of power, maybe another 30W for 3 more.

Thanks for the advice guys. Its the cheapo corsair, a big mistake when i made my last system was not investing in a big FU PSU when they were much much cheaper. Well i MM the old one and grab a big boy like above.

If it's a rebadged Seasonic platform there's nothing wrong with it. To be honest even the old TX series is still decent compared to the newer crap Corsair have put out (Channel Well DSAs in the CX and recent TX revisions).

Your 4890 is still a pretty descent card.

If your after a stopgap upgrade, i would try and get a cheap quad core cpu.

Get your post count up (without spamming) and get into the members market.

I'd wait if I were you, your CPU will be a bit of a bottleneck for a decent 6*** series card, save for a few months and upgrade the whole lot

If you consider your current performance fine, you should wait until it's not fine, especially considering we're on the verge of seeing a lot of new stuff.

Duals are getting a bit dated now. I've upgraded my graphics card knowing my CPU would be on the limit and so it is.. Frostbite engine maxes my dualcore. I know i will need to replace the cpu, mobo and ram soon as possible. I'd wait and save for a big upgrade.. for now just ramp up your overclocks and tighten your purse strings :p
