as im sorting out this build for my boy thx to u guys on here, i was wondering, if i should go to 16gb ram, say 4x4gb sticks, ive seen some mobos that have 4 dimm slots, so wondered if its worth it, or even possible, as hes into his video editing in a big way

i know mobos say 4 x dimm slots, but im assuming you can put 4 x 4gb sticks in, or maybe u can only use just 2 slots at a time.

probs a stupid question

i was just browsing mobos and noticed, some had 4x dimms, so just wondered would there be any benefit to using all 4, it says max 16gb. but have read using 2 x dimms is more stable.
was just a thought as more ram would help with his editing i thought

There might be a benefit of having 16 over 8 if he's editing massive videos. That's why I'd say start with 8 and leave room to upgrade. If 8 is fine then you save a few quid. If he wants an extra 8 it's a cheap present later, or something he can earn himself.

You'll be fine using all 4 slots assuming the motherboard supports 4GB per slot.
It shouldn't really be any less stable and it would help with video editing.

To be fair unless he's doing some real heavy stuff 8GB RAM (2x4) should be more than enough. You could always stick the other pair in at a later date.

I edit HD footage and use 3d applications and have never ran out of memory so far and I'm using 6GB.

I'm using 4 slots right now... I stuck in another 2x2 GB of RAM the other day (bringing total to 8) Computer hasn't had an issue with it... - Saying that no OC

yeah seems like a gd option. although this just caught my eye on google, a G.Skill 12GB (3x4GB) DDR3 PC3-10666 1333mhz Triple Channel Kit.

but i know what ya saying and i think 8gb is way to go 1st.

cheers for the info ppl:)

I can get an identical 8GB kit as the one I currently have for £40. Is it worth upgrading simply because it's THAT cheap? 16GB sounds better then 8GB... :P

I was just about to start a topic saying "should I go 16GB?" for no reason other than the price! :D The Kingston HyperX Genesis Grey is only £79.98 for 16GB... seems too good not to go with 16GB!

Going from 2 to 4 sticks affected my overclock in that I had to ramp up the CPU-NB voltage (memory controller) on my Phenom II from 1.15 to 1.35V. Which then makes me hit a heat ceiling about 200MHz lower than before :(

If you aren't fiddling around with undervolting parts of your CPU, then I imagine it's no biggie :)
