have you thought of going for one of the the prebuilt systems? free windows so just add a graphics card, maybe a little more economical.

you still have to pay for the OS in pre-builts, and i think the OP will really enjoy building one from scratch.

even if you got windows for free (which you dont) the added cost of having someone build it for you would almost certainly be more than the cost of windows as a student

i guess your looking at the home systems. you are not getting the OS for free, but it is just a default option. you save £66.66 ex VAT by going with no OS

Two problems there,

1) you should get a AM3+ motherboard so you have Bulldozer support.

Could drop the i5 down to a 2300k and put the price difference into a better GPU, will get a custom heatsink in the future so I could OC it to bring the performance up.

There is no 2300K

The only sandybridge cpus that overclock at the moment are the i5 2500K and i7 2600K (and you must have a P67 or Z68 motherboard also)

You will find you are then bottlenecked by the graphics card, but its a lot easier to replace a graphics card in the future than it is to do a CPU change etc.

I still need to check the card's not the part of my current PC that is broken as I keep getting blue screened, I'd rather have a solid set up with an i5 that I could drop in a possibly more expensive GPU into at a later time and play games on mid/low range settings for a while. Thats has things like SATA3.0 and USB3.0, it only has two RAM slots, so maybe worth getting 8GB now.
