I am building a new Sandbridge i5 2500k (that I plan on overclocking into the 4*GHz) in the next few weeks running a single 480SOC (with a low end secondry card, I plan on running 4 screens, 1 for gaming off the 480 plus 1 2d and 2 more 2d off the low end card) and a little stable of hard drives.

I currently have a 650w Corsair so I was almost sure I would be needing to get a new one, but is it worth getting that PSU while it's on offer? Or is it a bit overkill?

unless you're going sli, a 650w should be fine... however, you can never have 'too much' psu... in case you decide to go sli in the future, it's good to know you just can :)

if you've got the spare cash flopping around, go for it :)

LOL I hear you.

My only worry was driving 4 screens would be pushing both the low end and the 480 soc harder, thus eating more juice. If we forget the OCZ for the moment would it be prudent to up the wattage count a bit? Even if it's only by 100-200 watts?

For 480's, 1000W looks good. 1250 for tri-sli. I don't think the number of screens will drive the power up massively, if at all.

the 1250W version is only £15 more. Well, that's 10% increase, for 25% power.

Great Wall have been making high power PSUs for donkey's year, but their reputation isn't as good as Seasonic, Delta, or Enermax. Typical OCZ segment.

All I can say is look up pro reviews.

Worth it if you have the money, its always nice to go overkill with a psu and have the option to go Sli/CF anytime you like.

My 2500k + 480 rig (both overclocked) pulls 520W max, and that's during prime + furmark. In gaming it never gets above 480W. Even factoring the addition of a low end card, 650W should be fine. However, if you want a bit more headroom then ~850W would be more than fine, unless you plan on going SLi 480s in the future, in which case a 1000W PSU would be a good investment.

I think you really would have to be planning/want the option to add a second GTX 480 to justify buying a 1000W PSU.

Otherwise give your 650W unit a go, if it's fine carry on using it. If not then get a ~750W unit.
