Globalfoundries have just showed a slide confirming next generation Radeon HD 7000 graphics will be used in upcoming Trinity parts, codenamed Comal and Virgo.

We believe that this settles the score, HD 7000 is the official designation for Southern Islands, AMD’s 28nm next generation graphics. The current schedule still indicates a launch in later part of September, just before the end of the quarter, to make the investors a bit happier. This should take place a year after the Northern Island Radeon HD 6000 launch.

So the Radeon HD 7000 series moniker looks legitimate, and we do have a picture to back it up. It is now certain that AMD comes first with its 28nm chips, before Nvidia's Kepler that has reportedly been pushed back for early 2012. It was interesting that despite close partnership with Globalfoundries and the fact that they have 28nm, it still decided to manufacture its chip at TSMC, as TSMC has much more experience with highly complex graphics chips.

AMD simply didn’t have money or the practical need to support two different 28nm chip designs, one for TSMC and one for Globalfoundries.

This is good but i wonder if we will see a high end single gpu part before christmas? It certainly would be nice if that were to happen.

How does anyone work out from that that these 7000 series GPU's are available end in September?

Doesn't it say available 2012 at the bottom?

Does it not also say 32nm at the top?

The text and the pic seem to totally contradict each other as far as I can see.

It would be nice. Unfortunately, I'm of the opinion that if we do, it'll be one of those releases whereby you can't actually buy the product until January :|.

Hoping to be proved wrong.

I think there was a thread couple of months ago on this forums where it was shown that 7990 would have double the amount of Gflops processing power compared to 6990.

So 7990 may well end up twice as fast as 6990 which is a beast itself.

I would love to get 7990:cool:.

I can imagine Battlefield 3 bowing before the new mighty AMD gfx king 7990 at highest settings at 1920x1080p or even at higher res :D:p

Jesus, its not difficult, did anyone READ THE SLIDE. Its about CPU's/APU's.

However as part of Trinity the gpu on die will be part of the HD7000 series. Its a APU, its got a CPU, AMD CPU's are done on the 32nm process, like Llano.

Better have a decent CPU to back that GPU up though!!

I just hope all this info about 7xxx doesn't turn out to be fluff again (typical AMD - unfortunately).

only 2 lines of text? are you ill or smth? :p

Yeah lol

If 7990 does turn out to be a monster, it would be very interesting to see what kind of cpus and their speeds needed to ensure no bottlenecking of such gfx card.

I have [email protected] and would like to see how it works with 7990!!:eek:

Just ordered a MSI 6950 great !!! :p Running 1920 x 1080 on my 4890 is showing its age. If the 7xxx series turn out to be a big boost ill sell the 6950 and upgrade again :)

On paper, possibly (which is all Nvidia's going to manage too). Doubt we'll see anything on the shelves this side of Christmas.

Kind of expected as much, thanks for clearing that up!
Iam within days of getting paid, an hitting Buy, so wanted to just know was it best to wait to end of september, but its a september paper launch! ;)
