Dropped my bag today getting out of the car, literally from waist height... didn't think anything of it... just got my 2011 MacBook Air out and it's dented the corner and taken a chunk out of the lid (on the corner) and scratched the bottom corner also.

Have previously been in discussion with Apple for the entirely unrelated decision of returning it (was unsure if actually needed a Macbook) and tomorrow is my last day to return. Apple actually have a courier arranged to collect it and are just waiting for me to confirm that I indeed want to return it for a refund.

So, now that i've dinged it, what are my options? I purchased it from the HE online store on my Amex, so I believe I have payment protection (so a £50 excess to get a replacement hopefully) but is that my best and only option? :( Is it worth telling Apple and see if I can still return it as planned (lol - obviously extremely unlikely, but just brainstorming!)

I know it's wrong but I'd be tempted just to send it back and not say anything.

Pretty sure they will return it to you and possibly charge you for shipping as the 14 day returns policy certainly won't cover damaging the item.

7.3 Conditions to exercise the right to withdraw from the contract. You can exercise your right to return the Product to us or cancel the entitlement to Services and obtain a refund of the price of the returned Product or Service entitlement provided: (i) You inform us of your decision to cancel the contract within 14 Calendar Days of delivery of the Product or the date you purchased the Services; and (ii) The Product(s) are returned in their original condition and the security seals on the Product(s) are intact; and (iii) The Product(s) are returned in accordance with the procedure described in paragraph 7.4 below. Please note that while the Product(s) remain in your possession you are under a duty to ensure that the Product(s) are kept safe and secure.

7.4, (3)
Apple reserves the right to reject a returned Product that was damaged because it was improperly packaged during the returns process.

11.5 Subject to clause 11.4 we will not be liable under the Contract for any loss of income, loss of profits, loss of contracts, loss of data or for any indirect or consequential loss or damage of any kind howsoever arising and whether caused by tort (including negligence), breach of contract or otherwise.

Sell it on the Members Market (or elsewhere).

If you return it to Apple -- and if they're doing their jobs properly -- they will see the damage and reject it. If you lie, and say it was always like that, they're going to wonder why you didn't say something when it first arrived.

can i ask why you were using a macbook air that you didn't "need"??

and why was it not boxed and safe if you had decided to send it back?

i would say send it to apple but send them an advance message by email saying that it was acidently damaged by you.

it's up to you at the end of the day.

but apple have been very understanding when i have had issues in the past but it is your fault, so it should be up to them if they want to charge you for re-furbing.

Personally I would keep my mouth shut and hope they don't say anything. From the pictures it looks pretty borderline - it's noticable but it's hardly a crack across the screen. You're going to live or die based on whether they consider it a "minor cosmetic imperfection" but I don't see anything morally wrong in trying.

I don't see anything morally wrong in trying.

I know some people are only joking, but no wonder this Country is in the mess it is in. Morally corrupt bankers, mp's, rioters and now overclockers members :D

If someone rammed a shopping trolley into your car and dented it and just walked off you would be well pee'd off. Same thing.

Just admit you dropped it. You could say you dropped it while packing it up for sending back. Accidents happen.

Sorry having a bad day :p

You have damaged it so don't send it back as they will just return it and say that you have damaged it unsurprisingly. They can't put that on the refurb store so they would have to completely remove all components, test them for any damage from the fall and then replace the case. I doubt they would be happy about that.

Just think yourself lucky that it was a macbook and not a plastic laptop. Or you would have probably been missing the corner your dropped it on.

Just sell it on; I doubt that it will lose much value from that dent.

Surely it wasn't dented when you asked a friend or family member to send it off on you behalf ;)

Well sir, you shouldn't trust your clumsy friend / family member with your laptop.

Can you see how that is always going to be their answer. Its impossible to hoodwink them here. You have to send it back well packaged or you are responsible for any damage. If there is no damage to the packing, they will be very confident that the dent in the laptop didn't happen in transit.

They couldn't care less if you got the queen to return it personally. It was sent out in perfect condition and it has come back with a dent.
