Your perception of this community

Although I probably shouldn't, I do associate the racism with the shop as I've seen moderators be very harsh on normal swearing, but then are happy to let a racial slurs slide, which is bizarre logic to say the least as obviously they are still expletives.

It's a bit sad I have this impression, because overall there's a lot of helpful and funny stuff, which is why I still come on here sometimes.
It isn't an unfounded perception though, racism used to come from the top. Things were cleaned up and tongues bitten when it started raising eyebrows elsewhere on the web.

I only joined these forums recently, but compared to other forums I've been a member of, OcUK members seem very helpful and quite funny. The majority of members seem to be able to engage in sensible debate without resorting to "your mum" jokes and there doesn't seem to be many trolls.

Keep up the good work!

I love this forum, maybe a bit too much at times.

Quite a few forums out there are strict, if you laugh at a sexist comment on the escapist forum you get suspended for a few days.

This place rocks my socks

Can be cliquey, can be narrowminded, can be entertaining, can be very helpful.

Some posters really go all out to make it more entertaining - dunno where they get the time - i take my hat off to those gentlemen. Would like more diversity in topics but the problem with that is people tend to jump on those who hold different views from the norm so the threads get stamped down.

This community has slid downhill considerably in the nearly 10 years I have been here.

When I first joined if you asked a question you got well thought out answers and good discussion about the topic.

Now you ask a question and you have to wade through the trolls and IMO arrogant mouthy buggers to get any answer at all.

Now I'm not saying that everyone that frequents this forum is a troll or arrogant but from what I see a large portion are.

My overall impression of someone based on their posts denotes how much value I put in their particular opinion on a given topic, and while I do value the opinion of most members here there are quite a few who I rarely put any stock in what they have to say and sadly this number is growing.

Don't let the join date or post count fool you, many moons ago my account was lost in a forum crash and I had to join again and I spend more time reading than posting.

I think it is an accurate reflection of computer enthusiasts, namely a wide range of people giving all sorts of advice and opinions, however slightly dominated by young white privileged idiots who cannot hold their ground in an argument on societal issues when put under any kind of scrutiny but are very good at giving technical advice.

The forum as a whole has never been known for its amazing moderation and probably never will be.

I'd hope that generally speaking the moderation is fairly good in that most of the time topics that are on dubious ground will be removed, it's certainly a forum that I normally wouldn't be particularly worried about visiting in work. That's not to say that the moderation is perfect, far from it, the moderators are human and will at times miss things or react in ways that may be less than ideal but overall I'd like to think they do a decent job. It might sound odd but before I became an underboss I don't think I quite realised how much effort and discussion goes into keeping the forums running fairly smoothly, it doesn't always work and when it doesn't it becomes noticeable, that's perhaps the biggest clue that ordinarily speaking it's reasonable. However the moderation team does rely on members RTMing posts and being self-policing up to a point so if you've got problems with what someone has done or said on here then please do report it, it's the best way to get a constructive result.

well, for a supposedly 'family friendly' forum (no swearing allowed etc) i do find it remarkable how the mocking of disabled people often happens. 4 times in the handshake thread just today infact. i'm sorry but i don't see how this is allowed because there is no need for it and more to the point, it is simply not funny. anyone who would find this kind of thing funny, i would have no time for in real life.

Related to the above, if there's something you find unacceptable then please do RTM it. The moderating team will miss things from time to time so if people help out and flag up what they find unacceptable it can be looked at - there's no guarantee that what you personally dislike will be removed because of the report but it will be looked at and that gives a better idea for the moderators what people are thinking.

Not really, much of it is in reaction to anti English rhetoric.

Maybe but there does seem to have been an increase in posters jumping in with anti-Scottish sentiment even before there has been any anti-English rhetoric - either they're getting their retaliation in first or I'm getting sensitive in my old age and the chip on my shoulder is growing. ;)

Either way I don't think there's any need for it to be quite so adversarial when matters of Scotland and England come up, I mean that to apply to both sides as there are Scots who are too quick to attack England equally as there are English who will immediately disparage Scotland. It's usually fairly obvious when something is intended in a joking manner and that's fine but it seems recently that there's been a bit less of the good natured joshing and more of the vitriol.

Right wing, xenophobic, intolerant bnp nationalistic fan club laced with some funny people that just about counter balance the 1st lot.

This forum isn't family friendly and never has been to claim it is is silly.

40% helpful advice

20% people talking as if they are an expert but aren't

20% random funny stuff

10% life advice for losers

7% retards

5% people who can't do basic maths

Full of people trying to show off how clever/witty/whatever they are.
At times, I'm one of them :o

I think there are variations between subforums though, for example I'd say people don't try to undermine the arguments of others as much in the gaming forums compared to say Football, Motors or GD.

Well I guess it boils down to individual experiences with the team and the hypocritical actions that we witness. Like I said, I refuse to waste time by going into detail because it's not really worth it, things will never change, so we just have to accept them or leave. That's not the image I'd want to portray if I ran the show but hey, **** happens.

Lots of insider jokes like smash that pasty, hovis, pancake. People seems to like quoting from ED too, not trolls themselves, just posting for a laugh. The mods (Dons) appear very reasonable, considering how busy this forum is.

I usually stay away from GD and SC cause many heated discussions take place and friendly atmosphere is thrown out of window. GD is definitely the most notorious section where you can easily get flamed:(:p

I once compared a Pakistani girl to Cheryl Cole and the responses just threw me on the ground:eek::p. Since then I cautiously enter GD with anti-flame coat :D

The technical sections are the best with 'Games' section coming on top. So don't really care what is going on in GD:p
