crossfire 6950 2gb power supply

Yes/No.
I'd love to give a more definitive answer.
That PSU is very well regarded an a premium brand, but it's generally recommended that a good quality brand PSU with 850watts is used on your specification.

By all means try the second card IF you have already ordered it!
But definitely DON'T overclock the CPU or GPUs!

If you haven't ordered it yet, have a look at the OCZ 850w OC have them on sale today.
Hope i helped, but wait for a more knowledgeable answer, from other members.

I'm running the spec in my sig below with a Corsair AX750. The CPU is at 4.4GHz and the 6950's have been unlocked to 6970's, overclocked and the power draw has been set to +20 and I've had no issues at all.

It's possible that you will be ok with 650W but if you wanted to be100% you could sell your current one and upgrade. Wouldn't cost too much more.

also i already have an MSI 6950 2GB

will this one be ok

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-128-MS&tool=3

or this one

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-273-SP

im guessing the manufacture doesnt have to be the same just both need to be 6950's?

which is the one to go for from the above?

they dont sell the exact one i brought a few months back! and is it just a case of plugging the new one in and connecting them togeather, or does it require new drivers etc?

thanks

any more input on this would be muchly appreciated!

also will it make a good difference? like at the mo i can run witcher 2 on high, will this allow ultra?

what res will you be playing at?

brands/speeds don't matter(the fastest one will be down clocked to match the slowest), 650w is right on the limits of acceptability as mentioned as long as you don't plan on oc'ing.

its best to be safe then sorry as the saying goes, don't need 1kw+ but 700-800w to allow for oc'ing of the cards and cpu(+ watercooling should you decide to go down that road).

im running at 1920x1080 on my games at the moment!

yea thats what im worried about! if i try the cards out and it doesnt work, will it damage the components?

so i can get either of the cards above? any one be better than the other?

thanks guys

what speeds is the current 6950 you have? doesn't make a difference as I said but if its stock not pre-oced then get the basic

or if you can old off for the time being maybe upgrade when the new cards come out.

Mm mixed opinions! What would happen if i put it in and the psu wasnt good enough? Will it damage anything?

Thanks!

yes it could take out all your system , had it happen to me a few years ago . but then again it was a hiper typeR 580w psu , known to take out systems lol

I'm also going two 6950's with a Corsair TX 650W with a overclocked amd 955 from 3.2 to 3.61ghz, people said to me it'll be enough power to power both of the 6950's I think you'll be fine

Yea i think my original 6950 isnt o/c'd just standard! I would like to o/c my i5 2500k down the line though but for now i guess the 650w i have should be enough? Wpuld a 2nd hand psu sell well on ebay or do people tend not to buy 2nd hand? As i only recently got it and would seem a waste if i cant get some moeny back if i get a new one!

You have enough power for now like you say :D, not too sure about 2nd hand PSU's but it's up to you, I doubt you'll need to OC you I5 2500k if you have two 6950's you'll be fine for atleast 2 years I reckon :D

I much prefer having some headroom, especially as psu's can degrade over time. I have a very similar set up to yours; more ram, fan controller and an ssd. 850w made sense to me. Picked up a new Corsair HX850 for £122 and it can still be found for that.

Well i may get the card and give it a go! I think its a good quality 650w psu so may not have any problems! Then ill get a new one come the time i o/c the cpu!

So will crossfire make much of a difference in games?

Thanks

also will i need a few more case fans to keep temps down?

and ill probably go for this one

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-128-MS

its an R6950 2gb, i assume this will be fine crossfired with a standard msi 6950?

sorry for all the questions but saves me making a lot of seperate threads :D ready to order once im sure it will be ok!

Depending on your case ofc but I would think you would be fine especially with the Twin FrozR III which is very cool anyway, think mine is like 20 degrees cooler than my other 6950 :p
