Everyone’s move to Australia

When I was living there all the aussies used to order from UK websites because most of the time if you spend over a certain amount you would qualify for free shipping. Amazon and chain reaction were frequented by me often. In fact I spent a fortune on amazon and CRC before I came back to the UK so I got out of paying VAT.

Just found this thread.

I have been contemplating this idea for sometime.

I travelled to Australia over the 2009 Christmas period for roughly 5 weeks. I did the tourist route, Cairns all the way down to Melbourne, Xmas in Surfers Paradise, New Years in Sydney. Of course, I really enjoyed myself, the lifestyle, the weather, the food and believe it or not Melbourne in particular.

Let me give a little bit of background, I work in IT surprise surprise. I primarily do System Integration / Implementation / Project Management (Prince 2 Practitioner). My girlfriend who is a Nurse (approaching 5 years together, yes...ring soon) we both have no problem really getting in the door, in fact it is me who is the liability.

We are both below 30, no kids, no real obligations in the UK apart from a mortgage.

My only issue is actual obtaining visa's and sponsorship for jobs. Though I do not know of any 'real' sources for jobs, does anyone have any experience on obtaining sponsorship? If so, what time frames and costs incurred?

Any details appreciated :)

The guys I talked to in Austrailia(some expats) didn't seem to think visas would be an issue at all. But securing a job would be very hard indeed. Especially in the mines which is what I would like to do for a while, or staying on the railways is the other option. It's something I will be looking at very hard over the coming months. Its such a lovely country and would love to move there even if it was only for a few years.

I doubt you will need sponsorship given your partners occupation.

Well we moved to Perth in WA 3 weeks ago, and we move out of our holiday apartment tomorrow into a nice 2 bedroom apartment just off the CBD :) Price wise, apart from property, we arnt finding it too pricey at all. In fact a lot of things are cheaper :). I keep on getting tempted in the Apple store, shiny IPADS and IMACS .....

So, just how hard IS it for UK people to emigrate to NZ?

It seems so damn tranquil over there. Such a sparse population, and lovely and conservative, almost victorian!

You wont have any problems at all I would think, in fact you will find your visa may be fast tracked.

Care to share any advice and how you went about it, assuming you had to get visas and sponsors. Rather than marrying an OZ or dual nationality.

Is it me or are a lot of semi professional / professional people moving to Australia form the UK?

I just found out another one of my close friends is moving out there and I have met quite a few other people over the last couple of years who where in the process or thinking about moving.

So its it really that nice out there? Or are people just attracted by what looks like a better pay package only to find that the cost of living is much higher.

Three of my friends have moved/are moving back to England in the last year.

only if they don't do there research, also moving isn't for everyone. You have to give your family and friends up, I expect most people think that's not an issue with phones. But once they are out there then it's a different story.

Correct guys, my girlfriend walks in the door and probably would be snapped up with employment. Though that said, I am uncertain on the stance of girlfriend, not married etc.

My concern, which I should have made clearer is finding a job for me! A move would be impossible if I could not source a job. Hence the sponsorship question for me and so on :)

I bought my 2011 MBP 15 inch and Ipod Touch 32gb from Apple Australia. Got the MBP over the telephone and it cost me £300 less than buying it in the UK. My touch was from the Mac store in Perth and it was only about £30 cheaper, but still good to make a saving.

However I wouldnt say a lot of things are cheaper, because they arent. Macs are an exception but all other PC components are the same price. Off the top of my head the only thing I can think of thats cheaper are Apple products.

If your girlfriend is sponsored for 457 visa to start work as a nurse, you can apply as a dependent on the back of her 457, which would then allow you into the country, however Im not sure if it gives you the right to work. You would still need sponsorship to work unless you did the working holiday route and found sponsorship whilst on your working holiday.

My wife is Australian and we plan to move back there in the next year or so. We were going to move sooner, but after a few evenings of research - we are far better off financially in Scotland.

Infact, we nearly moved back down to SE England recently - and again it worked out far better in Scotland.

In short, if you want to have high disposable income and are in a sought after part of the job market - move up to Scotland! ;)

Thanks for that, I hadn't considered just off the back of her, primarily for that finding a job risk.

Each of the states/territories has a state sponsorships skills list, we were on the list for Western Australia (the other half is a (Bio)Medical Scientist) so this meant that we could apply for a 176 State Sponsored Permanent Residency visa. Then it was simply a case of getting a skills assessment for the the main applicant and applying for state sponsorship. Once this was granted we applied for a visa and 6 weeks later were granted it. State Sponsorship moves you higher up in the priority ladder :)

What we did is a bit more detailed here.
