Yamaha RX-V396RDS AV Receiver

It's a capable receiver for ProLogic (TV, games etc) and Dolby Digital (some Sky & Sky HD channels, DVDs). It doesn't have DTS for DVDs, but that's not a huge issue for regular DVDs.

Get hold of some speakers, hook up a DVD player and enjoy :)

Yeah, I know. But that's only if you have a DVD player with an onboard DTS decoder and the 5.1 output on 6 x phonos.... Have you got that?

The Yam speakers are good for the money. You could save a very small amount going second-hand....but not much after carriage is paid.

thanks Grimley they look sound :)

thanks for explaining that lucid. do you recommend any dvd or even blu ray players with an onboard DTS decoder that could go with this receiver? also can those yams grimley suggested be hooked up with phono leads?

will getting a player with an onboard dts decoder allow me to get HD sound to the 5.1 speakers via the receiver i have?

Firstly, the Yam satellite speakers connect to the amp using speaker cable. The connection on the amp is the red & black speaker terminals. The only speaker to connect up using a phono cable is the subwoofer. None of the other speakers connect via phono... Only speaker cable.

DVD or Blu-ray players with 5.1 outputs.

There's a couple of things you need to know before going down this road....

1) 5.1 or 7.1 analogue outputs are found only on the higher end players, and it's getting less common too. Unless there's something in clearance then you'll be looking at Blu-ray players in the £200 - £300 region at least.

DVD players with 5.1 out are going to be a bit harder to find. Many of the manufacturers have mnmoved out of mid- and higher priced DVD players in to Blu-Ray. If you are determined to pursue this then I'd suggest looking for something in the secondhand market.

2) You are not going to have any lip sync adjustment. I haven't come across a mass market DVD or BD player with 5.1 outputs that also has a lip sync control. Setting the speaker size and distance isn't the same as lip sync.

If it was me, I'd stick with DVD on a coax or optical connection and forget about DTS and HD audio until I had the money to upgrade the amp to one with HDMI inputs and full HD audio decoding.

You wouldn't necessarily have to get a DVD with onboard encoding. The two birds with one stone approach would be to get a BD player as that'll quite happily play both Blus n DVDs.
I have an old Yamaha RX v795 that I've had for years. Still does the job despite no HD encoding or even HDMI connections! I have a Pana BD60 connected to it via the external decoder connections, which while a bit messy cable wise, does give me HD sound.
I willpribably upgrade it one day, but "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" springs to mind.
