Hey, I'm after a second car (Have an Octavia VRS as my main wheels) within the 4-5k budget. The reason why is not relevant here.

I'm not particularly fussed about make or model but I certainly am fussed with running and service costs. I mean, a secondhand RX-8 is in the budget but it's not exactly going to be a wise move.

So something cheap, cheerful and reliable that can deal with the very odd long distance trip. I don't follow Motors enough to know the popular cars in my price range so please pardon me if it's been asked and answered here a million times.

Sounds like an MX5?

I was going to say an early Mini Cooper S with a Supercharger...but that's not cheap the maintain.

I cannot think of a single reason why the reason why you need another car to do long trips in when you have an Octavia isn't relevent

How does it sound like either an MX5 or a Cooper S? He hasn't mentioned fun or performance at all and has a focus on cheap, cheerful and running costs?

It sounds like he wants a Fiesta or a Focus or something, but quite why I'm not sure I understand.

Single bit of worst advice ever? Your posts never make much sense to me Raymond.

He specifies nothing other than cheap to run, and you specify an MX5 sports car and a Supercharged Mini.

lol.

The Octavia is pristine and I need another car to get to get around for my job. I work in the construction industry and do a lot site visits. I don't like rolling up in my Octavia as it gets dusty and all other associated risks with parking on a major construction site. I work self-employed so I don't always get a company car, depending on the contract off course. For the next 9 months, I'll be forced to use my own car, hence the want for a cheaper car that I won't cry my eyes out if something happened to it.

Actually I discounted the cooper s :p

Its left with the mx5, which is cheerful isn't it? :D

Why get 2 cars that's similar? That to me makes no sense.

Seriously...just buy an old Skoda Octavia if you like them. I am struggling to think of much better.

in that case why even spend £4k-5k?

if it's likely to get wrecked and be sold on in a year?

So why spend 4-5k on a car? Id be annoyed if my 5k car got ruined on a construction site. Id be less annoyed if my 2k Mondeo was bashed about and filthy.

Isn't it time for a reality check?

It's a Skoda Octavia not a Flying Spur. Use it - and enjoy it at the same time. Driving something crap to save something nice just seems like a waste.

It sounds like you have pretty much the ideal car for driving between sites - it's smart, professional looking but it isn't particularly high value or flash.

Enjoy it - far better than 2xMOT's, 2xinsurance, 2xtax, etc etc.

Because the budget is what it is. If not, why not spend £500 and run the thing into the ground and keep doing it? I want something that's nice enough to drive and in good condition. IF I can get away with spending less, then great. But that's the budget.

You already own something that fits that. Use it and get some perspective. From your thread last year it was a second hand Octavia purchased a year ago, it can't be worth much more than £10k anyway, so buying a £5k car to keep it nice just seems daft?

Enjoy it!

I fully expect a toys/pram moment in a minute but if you think about it logically, everyone in this thread is right.

If you are that worried, sell it. It's a Skoda Octavia - it's a definitive A to B mid-sized car. If you are going to buy a £5k car to use for work why not just sell the Skoda and use the £5k car anyway? I mean will you actually drive it? Will you really bother to swap them around in the drive etc etc to pop to the shops? It's a completely normal car, it makes no sense at all to have a runabout to go with it.

Why buy into the world of £5k cars with repair bills, etc etc for such a trivial and bizarre reason?

Then if you have the money to throw about, Why worry about an Octavia?

Makes no sense to me.

Anyway pretty sure you could pick up a mondeo or the like for £3k if needs must.

I'd just use your car myself.
