LOST ending (spoilers, duh)

You really think we got a full 6 seasons worth of character development?!

That's my whole problem with Lost, the beauty of Lost was that right from the start we were so interested about the characters and their back history. This is what kept you coming back for more.

But surely you have to accept that this deteriorated rapidly in the later series?

I'd almost accept that the 'meaning behind all of the island's mysteries wasn't important, that was just the catalyst that drove the character development onwards', if that had actually been the case. But the writers chose to try and do both. But the plot they came up with in the later series was dire.

My whole point about the ending was that it could be used at any point during the show, as the concept was basically, you've seen their journey, this is how they all met up afterwards. The journey was interesting to begin with and the character development, back stories and interlinking was what kept you coming back for more.

This rapidly got replaced with pointless stories and weak scriptwriting. By the end of the show, Lost was surviving on the fact that people had invested so much time in the earlier series, that they wanted to see how it ended.

The disappointment was not the ending in itself, but just that they dragged out the show for 6 series, to give us an ending that would have been far more fitting at the end of the first 2 or 3 series.

If they had ended trying to answer all the questions, I'm sure there would have been just as much a disappointment, as there is no way you could please the entire audience.

I disagree. If it was planned well enough from the start and the writers were conscientious enough it could have been wrapped up far more satisfactorily. I guess they were constrained by the studio though in that they never knew how long it would last and were probably going on a series by series basis.

A lot of people complain about great novels being turned into movies and TV series but at least you know they were based on a story conceived, mapped out and tied up concisely by the author.

Definitely the worst ending to an amazing series.
Basically they're all dead so nothing needs explaining.

There were some great theories by fans piecing loads of stuff together and my fave was based on Egypt.

How many times do people need to tell you - THEY WERN'T DEAD!!!111111oneone

I got to about 3 episodes left in season 2 and thought "this is garbage and will have a stupid ending" turned out I was right and saved myself 4 more series of it.

About everyone I know who watched it, saw the end and thought why did I bother when it was all said and done. It was trying to be smart (by smart i mean tediously over complicated) for no reason other than they could.

Loved season 1 and it had such potential if they didn't drag it off in a ridiculous direction.

So which ones were alive in the last episode?

I asked this on post 27 & 30 but no one seems to know so you must know or else you wouldn't use capitals.

Hurley and Ben were left looking after the island
Kate, Claire, Sawyer, Desmond, Miles & Lapidus left the island
Jack died :(

Well that's the afterlife stuff so yeah they're all dead at that point

I've got someone shouting at me in capitals with !!!111111oneone after it (whatever that means) and others saying they are dead so which is correct?

Question again:
At the end of the last episode are they all dead?
If not who isn't dead?

they are all dead, hurley and ben are the last to die, the rest of the characters were waiting and welcoming them

So Longbow and TMFleming need to do their homework then and not shout at me (unless they think some were alive).

What?

When did I shout? And what homework do I need to do? I know that most of the flashback/sideways in season 6 is the afterlife - they are dead. This is after they either died on the island or left and died elsewhere.

they were all dead. hurley looked after the island for decades, centuries probably until a replacement was found

And this is my biggest problem with the ending because you just dont know how long the remaining survivors did live for, are we to assume they all lived full normal lives once they left the island? Did they at no point think to themselves about trying to go back to the island (again) to bring Hurley and for all they knew Jack back home? Who was the last to die? They're all waiting for Jack at the end of the show but he obviously died well before the likes of Sawyer and Kate.

The only questions I really want answering are those that wont ever be :(

i think you're supposed to make your own mind up but i personally believe they just went back to their average lives and died.

series 6 was a massive let down though compared to such a strong start and middle. they really didn't end it well, it bordered stupid and insulting at times.

You told me off for saying they were all dead in the last scene and now you're agreeing with me - make your mind up.

Your post implied they were dead the whole time, not just at the very ending in your post. You may not have meant that, but that's how it came across to me and at least one other poster (Antar Bolaeisk) in this thread.

You never stated "last scene" in your post so it came across as if they were dead straight from the very beginning.
