Booyaka's Garage to Family Entertainment Suite Thread

no need for me to get planning permission

my architect spoke to planning dept at the outset and because "permitted development rights" were not removed for my address, planning permission to convert my garage was not be required (just a building warrant).

Extremely cool mate, but without a projector and screen it's a bit of a waste of time imo, 60 inch TV? Hell, i've got a 70 inch in my living room.:p

With a dedicated room like yours, surely a good quality 1080p projector and 100-120 inch screen is a must have, the bat cave nature of that garage would provide perfect conditions for getting great contrast and picture quality from even a sub £1000 unit, the Optoma HD200x can be bought new for £650 or the Epson EH-TW3200 for slightly more, both are highly regarded in the sub £1000 price bracket and would give an excellent image in a dedicated room.

If you are intending on adding a more expensive projector than the above 2 later on when funds allow then fair enough, ignore my rant.

Sounds like your Mrs isn't entering into the spirit of things by not allowing a projector, talk her round mate and if that fails get one anyway, she ain't gonna divorce you over a projector. Bloody women!!!

Cheers for that - i know what you mean but sometimes with 2 kids and a wife you just have to accept that you can't always "quite" get what you want!!!:(

She very picky about having "anything show" in terms of speakers/amp/ps3 etc so having a projector hanging from the roof was always going to be tough!!

I'm very happy and excited with regards the whole room and will work towards a projector in the future. I'm going to throw in a 10m HDMI before the roof goes one "just incase" I head down the projector route in the future. But shhhhhhh - don't tell the wife!!:D

Doesnt need to Hang, just build an angled box into the ceiling and paint it the same colour - nearly invisible :D

Looks really interesting. Would love to have the space to do this. Shall be keeping tabs on this, enjoy your project.

+1

looks great so far but it's crying out for a Projector...

Thanks - not many updates as missus had a bad accident over the weekend and has dislocated her ankle and fractured her ankle in 3 places and her tibia!!

Weekend has been a blur of hospitals/kids etc

She manage to fall over in a pair of high heeled shoes and do that!!! Doctor said that the state of her ankle was more akin to a car crash.

Might be a chance to sneak a PJ into the garage now!!! haha.

Will try and get some pictures next couple of days as the builder/joiner is cracking on.

Update time -

Joiner is cracking on with the internals well. All walls and ceiling are about 3/4 finished with plasterboard

New External rear door into the store at the back as arrived.

New front window is here and ready to be installed.

dsc0457l.jpg

This is where the wall will be cut and knocked thru into the porch of the house and where you will enter the room.

dsc0458q.jpg

Cabling for rear speakers/lights and network all installed before ceiling is completed.

Floor insulation between the joists

Outside where the garage door was original the brickie has started building up the front wall. They did have to install a slightly better drain - a sort of chanel drain rather than a single point drain so that was done today as well.

dsc0461v.jpg

Never going to match the bricks to the existing ones as they are 25/30years old and weathered etc. Over time the new bricks will weather in as well.

Purchased various 10 x 3m patch cables for all equipment, some network faceplates etc.

Also managed to get a great deal on HP V1410-16G 16 Port Gigabit Switch

£77 !! Brand new.

Moving along nicely. Roof is one of the next major things to get done as well

Hopefully some more updates tonight - street was awash with vans this morning including brickies, roofers, joiners etc!! Neighbours won't be happy!!

New Window is in place

dsc0469hr.jpg

Flooring and most of plasterboard is completed as well

dsc0470c.jpg

Outside of the garage where the door was - all bricked up and completed bar the top of the window. Also shows the new drainage on the ground that the building control asked for.

Door hole has been knocked thru from the porch to the Family Entertainment suite!

Purchased Cantilever Arm TV Wall Mount Bracket today as well.

Intend on getting some "mocked up" pieces of paper on the TV wall at the weekend to work out what height the TV is going and speakers etc.

Final Kit list is just about certain now -

  • SAMSUNG PS59D6900 59" Full HD Plasma 3D TV
  • Fronts - Monitor Audio W280-LCR In Wall Speaker x3
  • Rears - Monitor Audio C265-FX Ceiling Speaker x2
  • Amp - Onkyo TX-NR609
  • Sub - XLS200 OR XXLS400 if I can get the missus to agree that she needs more "umph" :p

Will get all this ordered over the weekend probably.

Couple of things to ask at this point - Sky HD - i presume you need optical lead to Amp for Dolby digital as it doesn't do audio via HDMI??

Also looking at these HDMI leads - http://www.hdcable.co.uk/1m-hdmi-cable-3d-platinum.html - seem reasonable for the price.
